Xapo Bank vs N26 for international banking in 2026

Compare Xapo Bank and N26 for international accounts, foreign transfers, card spending, membership fees, country eligibility and Bitcoin features.

··3 min read

Xapo Bank and N26 both offer app-based banking and international cards, but their customers, prices and home currencies are different. Xapo sells a premium global membership centred on USD and Bitcoin. N26 is a European mobile bank with free and paid euro-account plans in supported countries.

For an eligible European resident who wants an everyday account, N26 is the more natural starting point. Xapo is aimed at a narrower customer willing to pay $1,000 a year for its banking and Bitcoin package.

Eligibility decides the comparison

N26 accepts customers in supported European markets and requires the relevant residence and verification. It is not a general global account available to anyone who wants a euro IBAN. Xapo's own country restrictions also apply.

Check eligibility before comparing subscription prices or card benefits. If only one bank can legally open the account for you, the other is not an immediate alternative.

Account and transfer costs

Xapo Bank charges $1,000 a year. Its fee sheet lists low charges for Faster Payments and SEPA, but a SWIFT send costs 0.2% plus the USD equivalent of £25. The payment network makes a large difference.

N26 offers a free account in many supported markets and sells paid plans with travel, insurance and other benefits. Its currency-exchange page (opens in a new tab) explains that foreign-currency transfers use Wise inside the N26 app. The rate and fee are displayed before payment, and N26 says it does not add another charge for that service.

If currency transfer is the only job, compare the N26 quote with a direct Wise account as well. The underlying transfer service may be similar, while account access and workflow differ.

Card spending and travel

Both cards are designed for international use. The actual cost depends on the transaction currency, ATM, account plan and whether the merchant applies dynamic currency conversion. Always pay in the local currency and let the card provider perform the exchange.

N26 is generally easier to justify for routine European banking and travel because there is no $1,000 starting commitment. Xapo must win through the complete membership, including USD banking and Bitcoin features.

Bitcoin changes the answer

Xapo joins Bitcoin custody, Lightning transfers and banking in one service. A user with a meaningful Bitcoin balance may value that structure, its custody approach and related account features.

N26 is not trying to be a Bitcoin bank. Choosing Xapo because of Bitcoin means accepting a different asset risk and service model, not merely paying more for the same current account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Xapo more expensive than N26

Yes at account level. Xapo charges $1,000 a year, while N26 offers a free plan in many eligible markets and lower-priced paid plans. Transaction charges still need a separate check.

Does N26 use Wise for international transfers

N26 says its in-app foreign-currency transfer feature is powered by Wise. The live app quote shows the conversion and fee before confirmation.

Which is better for a US-dollar account

Xapo's banking product is centred on USD. N26 is primarily a euro current account for customers in supported European countries.

Which is better for Bitcoin holders

Xapo provides the more closely joined Bitcoin and banking service. That can be valuable to an active holder, but it does not make the membership cost-effective for someone who only needs a normal bank account.
