Xapo Bank vs Interactive Brokers for FX trading in 2026

Compare Xapo Bank and Interactive Brokers for large currency exchanges, including spot-market pricing, membership, transfer use, Bitcoin and investing.

··4 min read

Xapo Bank and Interactive Brokers can both appeal to people managing large sums across currencies, but they are built for different purposes. Xapo is a $1,000-a-year bank membership joining USD banking, Bitcoin custody and a payment card. Interactive Brokers is an investment account with direct spot-currency trading at exceptionally low commissions.

For converting a large balance that will remain in your own investment account, IBKR is usually the stronger FX proposition. For banking, payments and Bitcoin in one membership, Xapo offers a package that IBKR does not.

Why IBKR is hard to beat for a large conversion

Interactive Brokers' spot-currency schedule (opens in a new tab) lists 0.20 basis point of trade value at its first tier, with a $2 minimum per order. One basis point is 0.01%, so 0.20 basis point is 0.002% before the minimum. IBKR quotes from large banks and charges the commission separately rather than building a normal retail-sized markup into the rate.

That pricing can create very large savings on a high-value self-conversion. The account is still an investment brokerage, not a general money-transfer app. It is an excellent solution when you also invest and can keep the account within its intended use. Review the terms for your IBKR entity before using it for currency activity.

Interactive Brokers should not be presented as the easy way to pay a family member or overseas supplier. The clean use case is trading a currency pair or converting funds held in your own brokerage account, then using permitted withdrawals to an account in your name.

What Xapo provides instead

Xapo Bank provides a USD bank account, international card and Bitcoin services as one membership. Its 2026 fee sheet (opens in a new tab) lists the annual fee and separate payment charges. SWIFT sending costs 0.2% plus the USD equivalent of £25, while Faster Payments and SEPA carry much smaller listed charges.

Xapo therefore makes more sense as a continuing banking relationship than as a route to the lowest possible spot FX commission. A member may value Bitcoin custody, Lightning, card spending and bank access enough to justify the price even when IBKR is cheaper for a trade.

Which costs should be included

Include Xapo's membership when you would not maintain the account without this use. If you already pay for the banking and Bitcoin package, compare the added payment and exchange charges, while still reviewing the membership once a year.

For IBKR, include the trading commission, bid-ask spread and any later banking cost. The $2 minimum means its percentage cost is less striking for a very small exchange. The platform and account-opening work also carry a practical cost for someone who does not invest.

A sensible decision rule

Use IBKR when the money is part of your own investment and currency-management workflow. Use Xapo when the joined bank, card and Bitcoin service is the product you want. If the only job is paying someone else's bank account, also compare Wise and IBKR and a normal transfer provider before opening either account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Interactive Brokers cheaper than Xapo for currency exchange

Usually for a large spot-currency trade. IBKR publishes a very low commission with a $2 first-tier minimum. Xapo's costs depend on the membership and payment method.

Can I open IBKR only to send money abroad

IBKR is an investment brokerage and should be used as one. It is best suited to users who also invest and need currency conversion within that relationship. Check your account entity's current terms.

Can I trade currency pairs directly at IBKR

Yes, subject to account permissions, product availability and the rules for your IBKR entity. Direct spot-currency trading is a core reason its pricing differs from a consumer transfer app.

Which is better for Bitcoin

Xapo. Its banking membership is built around USD and Bitcoin. IBKR offers investment products and should not be treated as the same kind of Bitcoin banking and custody service.
