Wise vs TorFX: compare self-service and broker support

Compare Wise and TorFX for large international transfers, including total cost, personal support, exchange-rate tools and hidden bank charges.

··Updated ·8 min read

Wise and TorFX can both move a large sum between currencies, but the service around the transfer is different. Wise is a self-service payments platform with a visible fee at the mid-market rate. TorFX is a currency broker: it quotes a customer rate with its charge built into that rate and offers help from an account manager.

On a representative £25,000 pound-to-euro transfer, Wise's account-holder estimate is about £76.24, while our TorFX model is about £187.50. The Wise figure comes from live Wise pricing. The TorFX figure is a modelled margin, not a live TorFX quote. TorFX does not publish one fixed markup for every customer, so request a quote before deciding.

The short version
  • Wise is easier to price before registration. It uses the mid-market rate and shows a separate fee that varies by currency, amount and payment method.
  • TorFX is built around broker support. Its account manager, regular-payment service and currency tools can matter for property, emigration or business payments.
  • Our table favours Wise on this GBP-to-EUR example, but a negotiated TorFX rate can differ from the model.
  • TorFX says it charges no transfer fee. Its commercial margin is included in the exchange rate, while intermediary or receiving banks can still charge.
  • For a large transfer, execution and support matter as well as price. Prepare source-of-funds documents and confirm settlement instructions before moving the money.

TorFX can support personal and business transfers. Wise also offers personal and business accounts. This comparison focuses on one cross-currency bank payment, not card spending, receiving-account fees or a business payment workflow with several recipients.

How Wise charges

Wise converts at the mid-market rate and charges a separate fee. The percentage varies by currency and how the transfer is funded, while small sends can be subject to a minimum. Wise also applies automatic volume discounts when completed monthly conversion volume passes the relevant threshold. For a UK profile, its published discount table starts above £20,000 in a calendar month.

The live component reflects the account-holder pricing approach used by this site. It is still an estimate until the transfer is created: payment method, bank charges, verification and the time at which Wise receives the money can change the final result.

How TorFX charges

TorFX says it does not add a separate transfer fee or commission. Its customer rate is set when the order is confirmed, and its costs are included in that quoted exchange rate. The difference between that rate and the mid-market benchmark is therefore the main number to compare.

Our model uses a 0.75% rate margin for TorFX. That is not a published universal TorFX tariff. Actual pricing can vary with the currencies, amount, market conditions and customer quote. Ask for the amount arriving in euros, then compare that output with Wise at the same moment.

TorFX also warns that intermediary and receiving banks can deduct fees on transfers using the Swift network. Those third-party charges are outside our chart.

At this size, small rate differences are worth real money. Do not compare Wise's visible fee with TorFX's zero transfer fee in isolation. Compare the number of euros delivered after both providers have priced the conversion.

The modelled percentage gap grows with the transfer, but £100,000 is also where the service model becomes important. TorFX says online business payments above £100,000 require contact with its team. Wise has a large-transfer support team and can ask for extra evidence about the source of funds.

The chart is useful for screening. It is not a substitute for time-matched quotes on the day you are ready to fund the transfer.

When a broker can add value

A broker can help when the payment is tied to a date or obligation, such as an overseas property completion, tuition bill, pension transfer or supplier invoice. TorFX offers regular transfers and forward contracts where available. A forward contract can fix a rate for a future payment, which can make the home-currency cost predictable.

That predictability is not the same as getting the best future rate. If the market later moves in your favour, you remain bound by the agreed contract. Eligibility, deposits and cancellation terms vary, so read the contract rather than treating a forward as a free option.

Wise is a strong fit when you already know the beneficiary details, can fund the payment yourself and want a clear digital quote. It also offers specialist help for large transfers, but the core experience remains more self-directed than a traditional currency broker.

A large-transfer checklist

Before sending a house deposit or business payment through either provider:

  • verify the beneficiary details through a trusted channel;
  • ask which legal entity will hold and send your funds;
  • prepare evidence showing where the money came from;
  • confirm the rate-expiry or funding deadline;
  • check whether a sending, intermediary or receiving bank can deduct fees;
  • ask whether the recipient must receive an exact amount;
  • confirm daily payment limits with your bank; and
  • send a small test payment if the timing permits.

Wise says large transfers can face extra manual checks and that bank statements may not be enough on their own as source-of-funds evidence. TorFX provides a contract note after a transfer is booked. Keep the quote, contract note and beneficiary instructions together.

Our large-cost comparison can screen providers before you request bespoke quotes. The real cost of sending money guide explains why the delivered amount is more useful than a zero-fee headline.

Who should choose which provider

Choose Wise if you want transparent pricing, a self-service transfer and a mid-market benchmark that is easy to audit. Its volume discounts can also reduce fees on higher monthly conversion totals.

Choose TorFX if you value an account manager, want help arranging a property or business payment, or need a regular-payment or forward-contract facility that is available to you. Judge it on the quoted rate, not the absence of a separate transfer fee.

Check Interactive Brokers when a large exchange will fund an investment, settle a trade or hedge portfolio exposure inside the brokerage. Its spot-currency pricing can be far lower than both providers' percentage costs.

Get both transfer quotes if you must pay another person. Wise and TorFX provide a direct process for paying the recipient that IBKR does not replace.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wise cheaper than TorFX?

Wise is cheaper in our representative GBP-to-EUR model. TorFX does not publish one fixed markup for every transfer, so its real customer quote can be better or worse than the estimate shown. Compare the exact recipient amount at the same time.

Does TorFX really charge no fee?

TorFX says it does not charge a transfer fee. It provides a customer exchange rate with its charges built into that rate. Intermediary or receiving banks may still deduct fees, especially when a payment uses Swift.

Which is better for buying property abroad?

Wise can suit a customer who wants a transparent self-service payment and is comfortable managing the timing. TorFX can suit someone who wants an account manager or a forward contract for an eligible future payment. The better fit depends on the quote, completion deadline and support you need.

Does Wise discount large transfers?

Wise publishes volume discounts based on completed conversion volume within a calendar month. Thresholds depend on the account's registered address. For UK profiles, the first published discount bracket starts above £20,000, and only the amount in the higher bracket receives the lower rate.

Are forward contracts risk-free?

No. A forward contract can fix the exchange rate and make a future cost predictable, but you are normally committed even if the market later moves in your favour. Read the eligibility, deposit, variation and cancellation terms before agreeing.

Wise figures use the site's current account-holder estimate. TorFX figures are modelled from a representative exchange-rate margin because TorFX provides individual customer rates rather than one public markup. Neither figure includes every possible intermediary or receiving-bank fee. Confirm the final quote, funding deadline and amount received before transferring.
