Wise and Instarem are close competitors for app-based international bank transfers. Wise prices the conversion at the mid-market rate and adds a visible fee. Instarem starts with a Reuters reference rate, adds a margin and can charge a transaction fee based on the sender country, payment method, destination and amount.
For a representative S$1,000 Singapore-dollar-to-Indian-rupee transfer, Wise's account-holder estimate is about SGD 3.96 and our Instarem model is about SGD 5.00. This is a useful screen, not a universal result. Instarem's official pricing starts from 0.4%, and the exact fee and margin are shown when a transfer is set up.
- Get exact quotes from both. The providers are close enough that currency pair, amount and funding method can change the order.
- Wise is easier to audit. It uses the mid-market rate and itemises its transfer fee.
- Instarem uses a Reuters reference rate plus a small margin and shows the fee and recipient amount before confirmation.
- Our SGD-to-INR model may favour one provider by only a small amount. Do not turn that result into a claim about every sending country.
- Availability matters. The sender country, recipient country, personal or business account and funding method determine which options you can use.

How Wise charges
Wise says its sending fee depends on the amount, payment method and currency pair. It converts at the mid-market rate without adding a markup. The percentage varies by route, and a cheap minimum applies to some small transfers.
The live figure shown here follows the account-holder estimate used throughout this site. Wise's final quote can still differ if you select a different way to fund the transfer or if regulatory taxes apply.
How Instarem charges
Instarem says personal international transfers start from 0.4%. Its exact fees and rate depend on the sending amount, currency, payment method, receiving country and receive method. It bases its rate on Reuters and adds a margin, then shows the total before confirmation.
Our model represents Instarem with a 0.5% exchange-rate cost and no separate fixed charge. That is a simplified estimate. A live Instarem quote can contain both a fee and rate margin, and it may land above or below the model.
SGD to INR at three amounts
Singapore to India is a useful head-to-head because both providers target digital bank transfers on this route. The ranking remains specific to this currency pair and sender location.
S$1,000: small differences matter
At S$1,000, a fixed or minimum fee has more influence. Check whether paying by bank transfer, PayNow, card or another available method changes the total before selecting the faster option.
S$5,000: compare the rupees delivered
At S$5,000, compare the exact INR output. A provider with a lower displayed fee can still deliver less if its exchange-rate margin is wider.
S$10,000: check limits and verification
Larger transfers can trigger different limits or verification checks. Prepare the payment purpose, beneficiary details and source-of-funds evidence if requested. Do not split a transfer to avoid checks.
The chart shows the site's current estimates. Because Instarem does not publish one fixed fee and margin for every route, confirm the modelled order in its calculator.
Route coverage and account location
Wise says customers can register and send from most countries, with restrictions in a published list of unsupported places. The currencies and local payout types vary. For INR, Wise sends to accounts in India using local payment systems and applies country-specific requirements.
Instarem's available send-from markets and payment methods depend on the customer's registered country. Its personal and business products also have different portals and rules. A price displayed for a Singapore personal account should not be assumed to apply to a US, Australian or European account.
Before comparing, set the correct sender location on both sites. If one quote is based on a different legal entity or funding rail, the apparent price gap is not like for like.
Funding method can flip the result
Wise lists several funding choices in supported markets, and the fee changes with the method. Instarem likewise says the selected payment method affects its fee. A card can be faster but more expensive, and the card issuer can add a cash-advance or other charge outside the provider's quote.
For the cleanest comparison:
- use a bank-funded quote from each provider;
- compare again with the fastest method only if speed matters;
- include any card-issuer fee;
- check the rate-lock deadline; and
- confirm whether the quoted recipient amount is guaranteed after funding arrives.
Delivery and recipient details
Both products are best compared as bank-account transfers on this route. Enter the recipient's legal name exactly as held by the bank and check the account number and required bank code. Indian transfers can also ask for a stated payment purpose.
An estimated delivery time is not a guarantee. Funding delays, bank cut-off times, compliance review, incorrect details and recipient-bank processing can all affect arrival. If a payment has a hard deadline, leave room for checks rather than choosing only by the fastest headline.
Personal versus business use
Both providers offer business services, but a personal-transfer quote does not automatically apply to a supplier payment. Some destination currencies accept personal beneficiaries but restrict business payments. Wise publishes currency-specific restrictions, and Instarem directs business customers to its business portal for exact rates and fees.
If you are paying an invoice, select the correct business account and payment purpose. Compare batch tools, approval controls and accounting exports separately from the FX cost.
Our Singapore to India guide covers recipient and route details. See the comparison tool for other currencies, and read markup versus transfer fee before judging a zero-fee promotion.
Who should choose which provider
Choose Wise if you want a broad self-service account, a mid-market rate and a clearly separated fee. It is also useful when you hold or receive several currencies in one account.
Choose Instarem if its live quote delivers more on your route, you prefer its regional payment options or you already use its personal or business platform. Its public starting price is competitive, but the exact total is route-specific.
Add Interactive Brokers when a large exchange is needed to enter an investment, settle a trade or hedge exposure in the brokerage. Its spot-currency commission can be substantially lower than either transfer provider's percentage cost. It is not a direct payment service for another person.
Quote both if the providers are within a few dollars. The order shown by one representative model is not reliable enough to skip a live check when the real fee paths are close.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wise cheaper than Instarem?
It depends on the currency pair, amount, sender country and funding method. Our live Wise estimate and modelled Instarem cost give a useful indication for SGD to INR, but Instarem's exact fee and rate are shown only for the transfer being set up. Compare recipient amounts from both.
Does Instarem use the mid-market rate?
Instarem says it sources competitive FX rates from Reuters and adds a minimal margin. That is different from Wise's stated approach of using the mid-market rate and adding a separate transfer fee.
Does Instarem charge a transfer fee?
Yes, it can. Instarem's official fees page says personal transfers start from 0.4%, with fees and exchange rates varying by amount, currency, payment method, destination and receive method. It says the applicable cost is shown before confirmation.
Which is better for Singapore to India?
Both deserve a live quote. Compare the same SGD amount and payment method, then judge the INR delivered, arrival estimate and any card or bank charge. The cheaper provider can change as the amount changes.
Can I use a personal quote for a business payment?
Do not assume so. Personal and business accounts can have different eligibility, fees, documents and supported payment purposes. Use the correct account type and confirm that the destination currency accepts the intended business payment.
Wise figures use the site's current account-holder estimate. Instarem figures use a simplified published-rate model and are not live checkout quotes. Fees, margins, taxes, payment methods, availability and limits vary by sender country and route. Confirm the exact recipient amount and terms before paying.
