OFX vs TorFX: compare fees, support and transfer tools

Compare OFX vs TorFX exchange-rate costs, account support, eligibility and tools for large, regular or future international payments.

··Updated ·7 min read

OFX and TorFX are tied in our model, so neither wins on price without a live quote. Both earn money through the customer exchange rate and are strongest on account-to-account transfers. OFX has a polished global self-service flow with round-the-clock support; TorFX puts more weight on a named account manager. Eligibility, especially for US residents, may decide before price does.

The practical difference is service style. OFX suits someone who wants to book and track transfers online while retaining access to a specialist at any hour. TorFX gives each customer an account manager who can discuss timing, documents and the agreed rate. Both approaches can work well for a large property, emigration or recurring payment, but only if the provider is available for the customer's country and intended recipient.

Neither provider needs a large visible transfer fee to earn money. The cost can sit in the exchange-rate margin: the gap between the mid-market reference rate and the customer rate you agree. The fair comparison is therefore the final amount delivered from the same starting sum, quoted at about the same time.

OFX vs TorFX fees: a live quote breaks the tie

Our model applies the same estimated markup to both providers on a £10,000 sterling-to-euro bank transfer:

Using today's market rate · GBPEUR · 10,000 GBP

The identical result is a modelling choice. TorFX says it charges no transfer fee or added cost outside the agreed exchange rate. OFX's personal quote page can show a $0 provider fee, while noting that it customises rates for high-value transfers. Neither statement tells you which customer rate will be better today.

At £50,000, the model remains tied but the quote matters more:

A 0.10 percentage-point difference in the rate is worth about £50 on that conversion before outside bank charges. Ask both providers to quote the same sell amount and recipient currency within a short window. Record the amount the recipient gets, not just the displayed rate, because the quote orientation can confuse an otherwise fair check.

The no-fee claim does not settle the comparison. The better broker is the eligible one that gives you the stronger final payout and a process you trust for the size and deadline.

OFX favours online control with support on call

OFX lets personal customers request spot transfers online and provides specialist help at any hour. Its US personal page says it sends more than 50 currencies to over 170 countries. Exact reach and products vary by the customer's registered country.

The service is aimed at payments to an account. That works for a home purchase, overseas savings, tuition or an invoice, but it does not replace a cash-pickup network. OFX does not accept cash or checks as funding in the United States. Bank and direct-debit choices depend on the sending currency and region.

OFX also offers regular-payment plans, rate alerts, target-rate orders and forward contracts where approved. Its recurring plan can schedule routine payments for up to 12 months. A forward contract can fix a rate for a future bill, but it may require a deposit and can leave you worse off if the market later improves.

OFX's US help centre (opens in a new tab) states a US$150 minimum in major currencies. Other regional rules may differ. Check the amount shown after signing in rather than carrying the US figure into a UK or Australian account.

TorFX favours a named account manager

TorFX assigns an account manager after registration. That person can discuss the current rate, run the transfer on your instruction and help with paperwork. TorFX says transfers below £25,000 can also be booked through TorFX Online at any time. Larger transfers can go through the account manager.

The personal service is useful when the transfer has a story: proceeds from a house sale, an inheritance, emigration funds or a staged property payment. A broker can tell you which source-of-funds records are likely to be requested before the deadline arrives.

TorFX also supports regular transfers. Its page lists monthly or quarterly schedules funded by Direct Debit or debit card, with the exact choices depending on the account. Like OFX, it offers tools such as forward contracts and target-rate orders. These products can control timing risk, but they bind the customer once booked.

TorFX says it supports transfers of all sizes and charges through the agreed exchange rate rather than a separate transfer fee. Small sends can still be poor value if the customer rate is less competitive, so ask for the same quote comparison at £500 that you would at £50,000.

Eligibility can settle OFX vs TorFX first

TorFX operates through different group entities and local permissions. Its UK site points EU and EEA customers to terms provided by Currencies Direct Spain. Its current US state guide (opens in a new tab) divides states and territories into three groups: full service, own-account-only payments, and unavailable service.

That distinction matters. An own-account transfer, such as moving your US savings to your own overseas account, is different from paying a third-party property seller or family member. Entering a US address on a UK quote form does not prove the intended payment is allowed.

OFX also applies local terms, product approvals and identity checks. Forward contracts are not offered in every place, and OFX may set daily or payment-method limits. Both providers can ask for proof of identity, source of funds and the reason for payment.

Check eligibility in this order:

  1. your country and, in the United States, your state of residence;
  2. whether the recipient account is yours or belongs to someone else;
  3. the currency pair, amount and intended purpose;
  4. the documents and funding method required before the deadline.

Do this before comparing rates. An attractive quote has no value if the provider cannot legally complete the payment.

Regular payments and future rates need care

Both brokers can help with repeated costs and future payments. The right tool depends on what is known.

For a monthly pension or rent payment, a regular schedule reduces admin, but the exchange rate may still change each time. For a fixed house-completion amount due in six months, an approved forward contract can fix the budget. For a payment with no firm due date, a target-rate order can wait for a chosen rate, with no guarantee the market reaches it.

Never book a forward contract as a casual rate bet. You remain responsible for settlement even if the market moves in your favour or the underlying purchase changes. Ask the provider what deposit, cancellation loss and settlement dates apply.

Read whether to wait for a better exchange rate before trying to time a required payment. Then compare today's spot quotes in the comparison tool.

Who should choose OFX or TorFX?

Pick OFX if you want to manage the transfer online, need support outside local office hours, or want recurring and rate-order tools in an eligible region. Check the OFX provider page for our model assumption.

Pick TorFX if its service is available for your residence and recipient, you prefer a named account manager, and its live payout beats the alternative. The TorFX provider page shows the estimated rate cost.

Price Interactive Brokers too when the exchange will fund a foreign investment, settle a trade or hedge portfolio exposure inside the brokerage. Its spot-currency commission is exceptionally difficult to beat on a supported pair.

Get both transfer quotes when someone else must be paid. OFX and TorFX can pay the recipient directly and provide personal help, which IBKR does not replace. Confirm bank charges, document timing and what happens if the payment date changes before accepting a rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is OFX cheaper than TorFX?

Our model estimates the same cost for both. Each provider quotes its own customer exchange rate, which varies by amount, currency pair and customer. Compare the live recipient amounts at the same time.

Do OFX and TorFX charge transfer fees?

TorFX says it charges no transfer fee outside the agreed exchange rate. OFX can show a $0 provider fee on personal transfers, but pricing and regional terms vary. Both can earn through the exchange-rate margin, and recipient or intermediary banks may deduct charges.

Can US residents use TorFX?

It depends on the state and payment type. TorFX's US guide lists full-service states, states limited to transfers between the customer's own accounts, and states where service is unavailable. Check the current list before requesting a quote.

Which is better for a property purchase?

Both can handle eligible account-to-account payments and provide specialist help. Compare the live rate, service eligibility, source-of-funds process, recipient details and deadline. Discuss a forward contract only if you understand the binding settlement terms.

The displayed estimates use each provider's modelled fee structure and today's mid-market reference rate. OFX and TorFX quote their own customer rates, so actual margins vary by amount, route and customer. Product access, third-party bank fees and contract terms are not included.
