Xapo Bank vs Wise for international banking in 2026

Compare Xapo Bank and Wise for international payments, account fees, USD banking, card spending, Bitcoin and straightforward transfers.

··3 min read

Xapo Bank and Wise can both move money internationally, but they are not close substitutes. Wise is designed to make international transfers and currency conversion easy to price. Xapo is a $1,000-a-year banking membership built around US dollars, Bitcoin and global access.

If the only job is sending money to another bank account, Wise is normally the more suitable starting point. If the user wants regulated Bitcoin custody and a USD banking relationship in the same product, the transfer price is only one part of Xapo's value.

Why Wise usually wins the transfer comparison

Wise displays a transfer fee and uses the mid-market exchange rate. The fee changes with the currency pair, amount and payment method, but there is no $1,000 membership to recover first.

Xapo Bank lists a 0.2% charge plus the US-dollar equivalent of £25 for a SWIFT send. That sits on top of the annual membership and any intermediary-bank deduction. Local Faster Payments and SEPA charges are much lower, so the bank network must be identified before comparing.

For a one-off transfer, count every Xapo charge but do not assign the full annual fee if it has already been paid for other reasons. Instead, ask a clearer question: would you maintain the Xapo membership without this transfer? If not, the membership belongs in the decision.

What Xapo provides that Wise does not

Xapo joins a USD bank account with Bitcoin custody, Lightning transfers, card access and wealth-related features. This can be valuable to someone holding a meaningful Bitcoin balance who wants banking access and a regulated custodian.

Wise is not trying to solve that problem. It is a multi-currency payment account, not a Bitcoin bank. Treating its lack of Bitcoin custody as a weakness would miss the reason most users choose it.

Card use and account reach

Xapo markets international card spending without an added currency fee or hidden markup. Wise's card converts supported currencies from the account and applies its published conversion structure when needed. Card availability and limits depend on where the customer lives.

Both products can be useful to someone who travels. Wise is easier to justify for ordinary spending because the account does not start at $1,000 a year. Xapo has to win on the wider package, not a coffee purchase exchange rate.

Safety and documentation

Xapo is a bank regulated in Gibraltar. Wise operates through regulated payment entities in its markets. The legal protection for a bank deposit, safeguarded payment funds and Bitcoin is not identical. Read the terms for the balance you plan to hold.

Both providers can request source-of-money evidence. Xapo users moving Bitcoin may also need records showing purchase history and wallet ownership. Prepare that evidence before a large transaction.

Frequently asked questions

Is Xapo cheaper than Wise for sending money

Usually not for a one-off bank transfer. Xapo has a $1,000 annual fee and separate charges for some payment networks. Wise charges by transfer without the same membership commitment.

Is Xapo a bank

Xapo Bank is regulated as a bank in Gibraltar. Its Bitcoin and other products can have different terms and protections from an ordinary cash deposit.

Does Wise support Bitcoin

Bitcoin custody is not Wise's main product. A user seeking a joined Bitcoin and banking service is comparing a different type of account.

Should the Xapo annual fee be included in every transfer

Include it when the transfer is the main reason for opening the account. If you already maintain Xapo for custody and banking, compare the added transaction cost while still reviewing whether the annual membership remains worthwhile overall.
