Frequently asked questions

What's the cheapest way to send USD to DOP right now?

Across the displayed providers and plans at 250 USD, Revolut (Standard) ranks first at an estimated total cost of 0.10% and amount after conversion of DOP 14,665.07. Confirm availability, how you pay, how the recipient receives the money and the final provider quote.

How much does it cost to send 250 USD to DOP?

It depends on the provider and transfer setup. In this comparison, the difference from the market-rate amount starts near DOP 14.68 with Revolut (Standard); our typical-bank example is DOP 2,433.90. The market rate before fees is 1 USD = 58.7190 DOP.

Is it cheaper than using my bank to send USD to DOP?

In this comparison, Revolut (Standard)'s estimate is about DOP 2,419.22 above our typical-bank example (19.76%). Your bank's actual wire fee and exchange rate may be better or worse, so request a bank quote before deciding.

Does the cheapest provider change with the amount?

Often, yes. Fixed fees bite harder on small transfers, while percentage fees and exchange-rate markups dominate on large ones, so the ranking for 250 USD can differ from the ranking for 1,000 USD. The amount chips above re-run the comparison instantly.

Detailed USD to DOP transfer guide

Compare ways to send money from the USA to the Dominican Republic, including quoted prices, DOP or USD, bank deposit, cash pickup and home delivery.

··Updated ·8 min read

The best way to send money from the USA to the Dominican Republic starts with one question: does the recipient want pesos or dollars, and do they need an account deposit, counter pickup, or home delivery? A provider that ranks well for a DOP bank deposit is not automatically the best cash option.

This is a major family-remittance route. The Dominican Republic's central bank (opens in a new tab) reported that about 80.5% of formal remittance inflows in the first nine months of 2025 came from the United States. The comparison below estimates the fee and exchange-rate cost, but the provider's final quote must also match the recipient's chosen payout method.

The short version
  • Choose the payout method first. Account deposit, counter pickup, and home delivery have different availability, currencies, prices, and recipient checks.
  • Compare Dominican pesos received, not the advertised fee. A low fee can be offset by a weaker USD to DOP rate.
  • Treat the tables as a price model, not a payout quote. They compare published fee structures against the current mid-market rate; they do not confirm a particular local partner or cash location.
  • For transfers funded in the United States, payment method now affects tax. Since 1 January 2026, a 1% federal tax applies to qualifying transfers funded with cash or specified physical instruments, but not those funded from an account or with a US-issued debit or credit card.

What the public price test found

Our USA-to-Dominican Republic price test holds the send amount at $1,000 and records the evidence behind each result. It includes two exact recipient amounts: a Remitly new-customer offer and a Wise API quote with a dynamic DOP charge.

The Remitly offer delivered more pesos than the recorded no-cost reference, but it was promotional and does not describe the price of a later transfer. The Wise result was much more expensive on that date because its DOP quote included a large dynamic charge. Neither result should be extended to a different day or payout method without a new quote.

The study also checks Xoom and Western Union without assigning them invented recipient amounts. Xoom's public fee schedule lists a $0 fee for a $500 to $2,999.99 USD-to-DOP bank-funded bank deposit, but the rate still determines the all-in result. Western Union offers bank deposit, cash pickup and home delivery, while its final rate and fee depend on the selected payment path. These are providers to quote, not rows to rank from a headline fee.

Compare a $1,000 transfer to the Dominican Republic

One US dollar currently buys about 58.7190 Dominican pesos at the mid-market rate. The Banco Central de la República Dominicana (opens in a new tab) publishes a separate official market reference calculated as a transaction-weighted average from financial institutions and exchange agents. Both are useful benchmarks, but neither is a promise of the retail rate a remittance provider will quote.

In our current model, Wise is near 4.33% all-in, equal to about $43.35 on a $1,000 transfer. That is a modelled bank-transfer comparison, not a claim that Wise supports every Dominican payout method shown below. Open the winning provider's checkout and compare the final line labelled "recipient gets" for the same funding and payout choices.

The gap that matters is not just the transfer fee. If Provider A charges $3 but converts at a weaker rate than Provider B, the recipient can still receive fewer pesos. Our markup versus transfer fee guide shows how to calculate that difference.

At $5,000, fixed fees weigh less and rate differences weigh more. A 1 percentage point gap in total cost is $50 before any payout-specific charge. Re-run the full comparison at the amount you will actually send, then check the provider's identity, source-of-funds, daily, and recipient limits before paying.

Do not turn a limit published by one bank into a countrywide rule. For example, Banreservas' own remittance page (opens in a new tab) lists a US$10,000 equivalent maximum per customer per month for its service. Another provider or local partner can set a different limit.

Bank deposit, cash pickup, or home delivery

The Dominican payout choice changes what your recipient needs to provide.

Payout choiceUseful forCheck before paying
DOP or USD account depositA recipient who already has a suitable accountSupported bank and account currency, exact account details, any receiving charge, and final amount credited
Counter pickupA recipient who needs cash or has no suitable accountNamed local partner and branch, payout currency, opening hours, full legal name, identification, and reference number
Home deliveryA recipient who cannot easily reach a branchExact coverage, delivery fee, recipient name, phone, full address, identification process, and delivery window

Banreservas is a useful local example, not a list of what every provider offers. Its published service supports account deposits and counter payments in pesos or dollars. Its home-delivery instructions ask the sender for the beneficiary's full name, phone number, and complete address. Availability still depends on the remittance company and local partner selected at checkout.

The 1% US remittance tax depends on funding, not payout

The IRS says (opens in a new tab) that, from 1 January 2026, a 1% remittance transfer tax applies when the sender gives the provider cash, a money order, a cashier's check, or another similar physical instrument. The provider collects it from the sender.

Funding from a financial account or with a US-issued debit or credit card is outside that tax. A Dominican cash pickup does not by itself trigger the tax. The deciding factor is how the sender funds the transfer in the United States. If it applies, add the tax to the provider fee and rate cost when comparing quotes.

Covered US remittance transfers also come with federal rights. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (opens in a new tab) says the provider generally must disclose the exchange rate, collected fees and taxes, expected delivery amount, and availability date. You normally have up to 30 minutes to cancel unless the money has already been deposited or collected, and 180 days from the disclosed availability date to report an error.

A practical sending checklist

  1. Ask the recipient whether they want DOP or USD and how they can receive it.
  2. Compare the same send amount in our tables, then repeat the quote for the actual payout method on at least two provider sites.
  3. Check the recipient's full legal name against their cédula or passport. For a deposit, verify the account number and account currency. For pickup, share the reference privately.
  4. Look for the final recipient amount, not a promotional rate on its own. First-transfer offers can expire or price later transfers differently.
  5. Save the prepayment disclosure and receipt until the recipient confirms the money is available.

Frequently asked questions

Can the recipient receive US dollars in the Dominican Republic?

Some local channels support USD as well as DOP. Banreservas, for example, advertises deposits and remittance sends in either currency. That does not mean every provider offers a USD payout to every recipient. Confirm the payout currency, account type, and final amount before paying.

Does cash pickup in the Dominican Republic cause the 1% US tax?

No, not by itself. The 2026 US tax is based on the sender's funding method. Cash or specified physical instruments provided to the remittance company can trigger it; account funding and US-issued debit or credit cards do not, even if the recipient collects cash.

Do not rely on a single universal figure. Providers, funding methods, recipient banks, and local payout partners set their own transaction or monthly limits. A published limit such as Banreservas' US$10,000 equivalent per customer per month applies to that service, not automatically to every transfer into the country.

How long will the transfer take?

Use the delivery estimate in the final quote for the exact funding and payout method. Bank clearing, identity review, branch hours, holidays, and home-delivery coverage can all change the arrival time. Avoid promising the recipient "minutes" until the provider has accepted the transfer and shown when it will be available.

Are the comparison figures exact quotes?

No. They are modelled estimates based on each provider's published fee structure and the current mid-market reference rate. They can differ from a payout-specific checkout quote, a first-transfer promotion, a card funding charge, a receiving charge, or the 1% US tax where applicable. Confirm the final provider disclosure before sending.

Cost figures are modelled estimates for a typical USD to DOP transfer, not guaranteed quotes.
