Western Union vs MoneyGram: fees, speed and pickup

Compare Western Union vs MoneyGram fees, exchange rates, payment methods and cash pickup before choosing where to send money.

··6 min read

Western Union and MoneyGram are close enough that neither is always cheaper. Our model usually gives Western Union a small edge on the same bank-funded transfer, but a real quote can flip the result once you change the country, payment method, pickup location or delivery type. Compare the amount your recipient gets, then check which pickup counter they can actually reach.

The short version
  • There is no permanent price winner. Check both providers at the same time with the same payment and delivery choices.
  • The exchange rate matters more than a low headline fee. A $0 or $5 fee can still come with a weaker rate.
  • Pickup convenience can settle the choice. Confirm the exact branch, opening hours, currency and ID rules with your recipient.
  • Judge repeat pricing, not a welcome deal. First-send discounts do not tell you what the next family payment will cost.

Western Union vs MoneyGram fees on the same transfer

For a $500 US-dollar-to-Mexican-peso transfer, our model applies the same visible fee to both providers and a slightly smaller rate markup to Western Union. The modelled table shows the result against today's reference rate.

That difference is an estimate, not a promise. Western Union says its price changes with the amount, destination, payment method and delivery method. MoneyGram lists the same main variables (opens in a new tab). A cash pickup paid by card is therefore a different product from a bank deposit funded through ACH, even if both start with $500.

The gap grows in dollars when the modelled markups stay unchanged on a $2,000 send:

Do not choose from the transfer-fee line alone. Open both checkout pages within a few minutes, set the recipient to receive the same currency, and compare the final payout. Rates move, so an old screenshot is poor evidence.

Both providers support cash pickup, bank deposits and mobile-wallet delivery on eligible routes. MoneyGram also lists debit-card deposits and home delivery in selected places. Western Union may offer debit-card payout as well. Availability changes by sender country and recipient country, so a feature on the US homepage may not appear for your transfer.

The practical check takes two minutes:

  1. Ask the recipient which branch is easiest to reach and when it is open.
  2. Check whether that branch pays the chosen currency and has enough cash for the transfer.
  3. Copy the recipient's legal name exactly as it appears on valid photo ID.
  4. Share the tracking or reference number through a safe channel.

MoneyGram says a cash recipient typically needs valid government-issued photo ID and the eight-digit reference number. Western Union uses its Money Transfer Control Number. Local rules can ask for more, which is why the nearest usable counter matters more than the total number of locations worldwide.

If the recipient has a reliable bank account, compare bank deposit as well. It avoids a trip and the risk of carrying cash. Our guide to cash pickup versus bank deposit covers that choice in more detail.

Payment method changes both price and arrival time

A card can be fast, but it is often the expensive way to fund a transfer. Western Union warns that credit-card funding can cost more. MoneyGram says credit-card fees are slightly higher, and the card issuer may treat the payment as a cash advance. That separate issuer charge may not appear in the transfer provider's quote.

Bank funding is slower. MoneyGram's US help centre (opens in a new tab) says its standard ACH payment normally takes three business days to clear before the transfer is sent. Western Union's choices vary by route, but US senders may see a bank account, debit card or credit card online, plus cash at an agent.

Use a simple rule:

  • For an urgent cash pickup, price the fastest available card option at both providers.
  • For a planned family payment, compare bank-funded quotes and allow time for clearing.
  • If a credit card is your only choice, check the card issuer's cash-advance fee and interest first.
  • For a bank deposit, add a digital specialist to the comparison rather than assuming either cash network is cheapest.

Run the exact amount through our money-transfer comparison, then verify the matching setup at both checkouts.

Repeat transfers need a different test from first sends

Promotions can erase a visible fee on a first online transfer. They do not necessarily improve the exchange rate, and they expire. Save two figures before you decide: the promoted recipient payout and the standard payout shown for an existing customer.

Routine senders should also check saved-recipient tools, transfer tracking and cancellation steps. A familiar app saves time, but it does not excuse a poor rate. Recheck both quotes every few transfers, especially after changing the amount or switching between cash pickup and bank deposit.

Limits are another moving part. Western Union says its send limit can depend on verification status, destination, currency and payment method. MoneyGram also sets transaction and frequency limits. Complete identity checks before an urgent transfer; a high headline limit is no help if the account is still waiting for documents.

Which provider should you choose?

Pick Western Union when its recipient payout is higher for your exact setup, or its branch is safer and easier for the recipient. Our model often puts it slightly ahead on price, but the live checkout must confirm that. See the Western Union provider page for the model assumptions.

Pick MoneyGram when it produces the better real quote, its local partner is more convenient, or a supported payout such as debit-card deposit or home delivery solves a recipient need. Review the MoneyGram provider page before relying on the estimate.

Pick neither when the recipient can accept a bank deposit and another provider delivers more after all fees, or when a card issuer's extra charge wipes out the apparent saving. Price the job, not the brand.

Frequently asked questions

Is Western Union cheaper than MoneyGram?

Sometimes, but not on every transfer. Our model often gives Western Union a small edge because it assumes a slightly lower rate markup. Both companies change fees and rates by amount, destination, payment method and delivery method, so compare simultaneous checkout quotes.

Which is better for cash pickup?

The better one is the provider with a usable local branch, a stronger final payout and a collection process the recipient can meet. Ask about opening hours, valid ID, payout currency and cash availability before sending.

Is it cheaper to pay by bank account or card?

Bank funding is often cheaper but slower. Cards can fund an urgent send quickly, yet provider fees may be higher and a credit-card issuer may add a cash-advance charge. Compare the full funding cost, not just the provider fee.

Do first-transfer offers make one provider cheaper?

They can make the first send cheaper, but only for an eligible new customer and qualifying transfer. Compare the standard exchange rate and fee too. That is the price that matters for repeat payments.

The displayed estimates use each provider's modelled fee structure and today's mid-market reference rate. Western Union and MoneyGram set real prices by route, amount, payment method and delivery method, so the order can change at checkout. Promotions and third-party card or bank charges are excluded.
