Is MoneyGram a good choice?
Choose MoneyGram for recipient convenience and cash access; compare the final amount received carefully because both the fee and exchange rate vary by route and method.
Best for
- Recipients who need cash pickup
- Routes where a local bank or mobile wallet is supported
- Senders who value a physical agent option as well as an app
MoneyGram pricing at a glance
MoneyGram sets a transfer fee and an exchange rate for each transaction. It says the fee varies with the amount, destination, payment method and receiving method, and it also earns money from currency conversion.
This is a USD-to-EUR currency-conversion example. Your exact price may differ by country and by how you pay and receive the money.
About MoneyGram
MoneyGram traces its roots to Travelers Express, founded in 1940. The company has operated international money transfers for more than 85 years.
MoneyGram reports coverage in more than 200 countries and territories, about 480,000 retail locations and more than five billion digital endpoints. It says 70% of its transactions were digital in 2025.
How MoneyGram pricing works
The estimator or confirmation screen is the reliable place to see the current total. Paying by credit card can cost more, and the card issuer may separately treat the payment as a cash advance.
Cash pickup, bank deposit, debit-card deposit and mobile-wallet delivery can have different prices for the same route. Compare the recipient amount after both the fee and exchange-rate difference.
What else you get
Cash access
A recipient without a suitable bank account can collect from a participating agent, subject to local availability and identification rules.
Several ways to receive
Selected countries support bank accounts, debit cards and mobile wallets as alternatives to cash.
Strengths and trade-offs
Reasons to choose MoneyGram
- Very broad physical and digital reach
- Useful for recipients outside mainstream banking
- Online estimates show the current fee and exchange rate before payment
Reasons to compare alternatives
- The price changes by route, funding method and receiving method
- The exchange rate can be a larger cost than the visible transfer fee
- Cash pickup depends on agent opening hours, cash availability and local checks
- Credit-card funding may add MoneyGram and card-issuer costs
Support and account checks
MoneyGram provides online help, transaction tracking and assistance through participating locations; the local agent controls the cash-pickup process.
Senders and cash recipients should expect a valid government-issued ID, and the recipient name normally needs to match that ID exactly.
Proof of address, occupation, transfer purpose or where the money came from can be requested depending on the country, amount and compliance review.
When to look elsewhere
Choose Remitly for a digital personal-transfer experience with several receiving options, Wise or Instarem for a bank-delivered transfer where total cost is the priority, or another cash network if MoneyGram has no convenient pickup point for the recipient.
Large investment-related exchange?
For a large currency conversion that is part of genuine investing or trading in the account, compare Interactive Brokers first: its pricing can be difficult to beat. IBKR is a brokerage, not a stand-alone transfer service; use a transfer specialist for cash pickup or a direct payment to someone else.
What to know before you use MoneyGram
A low advertised fee does not necessarily mean the best value; always compare the final amount the recipient gets.
Not every receiving method or funding method is available in every country.
Transfer timing remains subject to agent or bank hours, system availability and regulatory checks.
