Is Western Union a good choice?
A leading option when the recipient needs cash or the route has limited digital alternatives. For bank deposits, compare the exact recipient amount because the fee and exchange-rate margin vary with the route and method.
Best for
- Cash pickup through a broad international agent network
- Recipients who need a bank, wallet or cash option chosen for their location
- Senders who prefer paying online, in an app or at a physical agent
Western Union pricing at a glance
Western Union earns money from transfer fees and currency exchange. The total price can change with the destination, amount, funding method, receiving method, channel and location.
This is a USD-to-EUR currency-conversion example. Your exact price may differ by country and by how you pay and receive the money.
About Western Union
Western Union traces its service history to 1851 and now operates a global consumer-transfer business. Its current US site advertises service to more than 200 countries and territories and a network of 600,000 agent locations.
The 2025 annual report gives a narrower operating measure: approximately 360,000 locations conducted consumer money-transfer transactions during the preceding 12 months. Consumer money transfer generated 87% of company revenue in 2025.
How Western Union pricing works
A low or zero advertised fee does not mean the exchange is free because the offered rate can include a margin. Credit-card issuers may also add cash-advance fees or interest.
Western Union pricing can differ by location, funding method and receiving option. Use its estimator at the time of sending and compare the final recipient amount for the same methods.

Price changes with how you pay and receive
Western Union's public quote flow compares cash pickup, bank and mobile-wallet delivery alongside the available payment methods and their fees.

What else you get
Cash reach
Recipients can collect at a large physical network when a bank account or digital wallet is not suitable.
Flexible channels
A sender can arrange a transfer online, in the app or at an agent, subject to local availability.
Transfer tracking
Each transfer receives a Money Transfer Control Number that the sender and recipient can use to follow it.
Strengths and trade-offs
Reasons to choose Western Union
- Extensive cash-pickup coverage and long operating history
- Several funding and delivery methods on many routes
- In-person service remains available alongside digital sending
Reasons to compare alternatives
- Pricing varies substantially by channel, location and payment or receiving method
- The exchange-rate margin can be more important than the displayed transfer fee
- Agent opening hours, local limits and recipient identification can affect cash availability
Support and account checks
Western Union publishes chat, phone and agent-location support, with contact details that vary by country.
Online registration normally requires a government-issued identity document, and a cash recipient may also need valid photo identification.
For larger transfers, Western Union says it may ask for the transfer purpose, occupation and source of funds in addition to identity information.
When to look elsewhere
Compare Ria for another extensive cash network, Remitly or WorldRemit for a digital-first transfer, and Wise when the recipient can accept a bank deposit and price clarity is more important than physical reach.
Large investment-related exchange?
For a large currency conversion that is part of genuine investing or trading in the account, compare Interactive Brokers first: its pricing can be difficult to beat. IBKR is a brokerage, not a stand-alone transfer service; use a transfer specialist for cash pickup or a direct payment to someone else.
What to know before you use Western Union
The 600,000-location marketing figure is the overall network; the 2025 filing says about 360,000 locations actually conducted a transfer in the preceding year.
The Western Union app is a transfer app, not a general-purpose digital wallet, although it can pay supported third-party mobile wallets.
A transfer advertised as available in minutes can still be delayed by checks, agent hours, currency availability or inaccurate recipient details.
