Revolut vs YouTrip: which Singapore travel wallet fits?

Compare Revolut and YouTrip in Singapore for overseas card spending, currency exchange, ATM withdrawals and international bank transfers.

··Updated ·9 min read

For a Singapore traveller, Revolut and YouTrip can both replace a pile of foreign cash and a bank card with a high overseas fee. YouTrip is a focused multi-currency travel wallet and Mastercard. Revolut is a broader financial app with several subscription plans, currency balances, a card and international bank-transfer features.

The comparison below uses an S$1,000 Singapore-dollar-to-US-dollar conversion as a weekday scenario. Revolut Standard is estimated at about SGD 1.00, while our conservative YouTrip model is about SGD 5.00. Do not treat that as a final ranking: YouTrip says exchange in its 12 wallet currencies has no fee or markup, while this site's model uses a 0.5% allowance for the effective difference between its rate and our mid-market benchmark.

For travel spending, YouTrip is the simpler default. It has no account or annual fee under normal use, and its card works in more than 150 currencies. Revolut is broader: its Singapore plans combine travel spending with international transfers and a larger set of financial tools. The paid tiers can be worthwhile, but only when the wider benefits justify the subscription.

This is specifically a Singapore comparison. Revolut's plans, prices and exchange allowances differ by country, and the YouTrip limits cited here are also Singapore terms. The currency tables measure exchange only. They do not include plan subscriptions, overseas-transfer fees, ATM charges or weekend adjustments.

What the cost-model table means

Revolut says it uses its own variable exchange rate and adds a fee when one applies. Singapore Standard customers have S$5,000 of weekday exchange each month before a 1% fair-usage charge on the excess. Premium has a higher allowance, while Metal and Ultra have no exchange limit under the current Singapore fee schedule.

This site's Revolut estimate approximates the difference between Revolut's rate and the live mid-market reference. It keeps all active plans visible. The monthly plan price is displayed separately and is not deducted from a single conversion, so a paid plan must be judged on all the benefits you use over a month.

YouTrip says it charges no fee for currency exchange under normal use. Twelve currencies, including SGD, USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, MYR and THB, can be pre-exchanged and stored. For other supported card currencies, YouTrip applies a Mastercard wholesale exchange rate with no additional fee.

Use the chart as a scenario, not a verdict. It does not override YouTrip's official no-fee and no-markup statement for its stored wallet currencies.

Overseas card spending

For a card purchase, either wallet can convert from an available balance. YouTrip lets users pre-exchange 12 currencies or pay in other supported currencies at its stated Mastercard wholesale rate. Revolut draws from its balances according to its card-payment and exchange rules.

At the terminal, select the merchant's local currency. If a US terminal offers USD or SGD, choose USD. Choosing SGD invokes dynamic currency conversion, which lets the merchant or its payment provider choose the rate. YouTrip warns that its wholesale rates do not apply when DCC is used. The same practical rule protects a Revolut user.

Pre-exchanging can make a travel budget easier to read, but it also leaves you exposed to the exchange rate moving after you convert. If you return with an unused foreign balance, converting it back creates another market decision even when the app charges no explicit fee.

ATM withdrawals

YouTrip's Singapore site states that the first S$400 equivalent of foreign-currency ATM withdrawals per calendar month is free from its own fee, followed by 2%. Revolut Standard lists up to S$350 or five international withdrawals per rolling month, whichever comes first, followed by 2% or S$1.49, whichever is higher.

The ATM owner can add its own fee to either card. Decline any offer to convert the withdrawal into SGD and choose the local currency. Check the screen for the operator's charge before accepting.

ATM limits are not a reason to carry no backup. Keep a second card separate from your main wallet and enough funds for transport or accommodation if an ATM rejects a prepaid or travel card.

International bank transfers

YouTrip now supports overseas transfers funded from the SGD wallet to local currencies in a defined list, including Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, the UK, the US, Vietnam and euro payments to supported European countries. Only balance added through PayNow or a linked bank account is transferable. Fees vary and are shown in the app.

Revolut supports a wider bank-transfer product. Singapore fees depend on the currency and destination: local-currency transfers use a percentage with a currency-specific minimum, while some foreign-currency transfers use a flat fee. The exact charge is shown before confirmation.

Neither set of bank-transfer costs is included in the FX chart. If the goal is sending money to a person rather than spending on a trip, use the transfer screen in each app and compare the final recipient amount. A provider such as Wise or Instarem may also be relevant. Our Singapore to India guide shows how that decision changes on one common route.

Weekend exchanges

The site intentionally does not add weekend-specific prices to the comparison. A Saturday search does not mean the user has to convert on Saturday, and changing the ranking by the current clock can make planning harder.

Revolut Singapore Standard currently lists a 1% fee for exchanges outside its defined foreign-exchange market hours. Paid-plan treatment can differ. If the conversion is not urgent, wait for the next weekday and confirm the in-app fee before exchanging. YouTrip states that normal currency exchange has no fee, but the available rate can still move with its benchmark.

Which app is easier to manage?

YouTrip's focus is an advantage for someone who wants to top up, exchange, spend and withdraw without choosing a subscription. The S$20,000 wallet cap and S$100,000 annual limit make the boundaries easy to understand for ordinary travel use.

Revolut provides a broader menu. That can reduce the number of apps you use if you also need bank transfers or value a paid plan's wider benefits. It also means more plan-specific limits and fees to track. Do not buy a subscription only to improve one small conversion without comparing the annual plan cost with the savings.

The best Revolut alternatives guide covers other product types. Use the full comparison when the job is a bank transfer rather than card spending.

YouTrip is the cleaner default for a Singapore user who mainly wants a free travel wallet and overseas card spending. Revolut is the broader product and can be the better fit when its transfer features, paid-plan benefits or wider money tools are useful. The small ordering in our FX model should not settle the decision because YouTrip officially states no added fee or markup for SGD-to-USD wallet exchange. Compare the two in-app outputs, then judge the plan and transfer features separately.

Who should choose which provider

Choose YouTrip if you want a focused Singapore travel wallet with no account, annual or exchange fee under normal use. It is a strong fit for card spending and pre-exchanging the 12 stored wallet currencies.

Choose Revolut if you want a broader financial app, need its international bank-transfer coverage or get enough value from a paid plan's full benefit set. Keep the subscription cost separate when judging the price of one conversion.

Quote a transfer specialist if the main task is delivering money to an overseas bank account. The card-spending winner is not automatically the transfer winner because payout fees and route coverage are different.

Frequently asked questions

Is YouTrip cheaper than Revolut in Singapore?

For stored wallet currencies, YouTrip says it uses the mid-market rate with no added fee or markup. Revolut's result depends on its own rate, plan, monthly usage and timing. Our conservative YouTrip model is not accurate enough to declare Revolut cheaper for SGD to USD, so compare both in-app outputs.

Does YouTrip charge an annual fee?

YouTrip's Singapore fee page lists no annual, setup, overseas-transaction or currency-exchange fee under normal use. Other charges can apply to certain top-ups, replacement cards, overseas transfers, recalls and ATM use above the monthly free amount.

What is Revolut Standard's exchange limit in Singapore?

The current Singapore Standard plan lists S$5,000 of currency exchange per month before a 1% fair-usage fee applies to the excess. Previous exchanges during the same plan month count toward the limit. Plan rules can change, so check the app before converting.

Can YouTrip send money overseas?

Yes. The Singapore product supports SGD-funded overseas transfers to a defined set of local currencies and countries. Only the transferable balance funded through PayNow or a linked bank account can be used, and transfer fees vary. It is narrower than the 150-plus currencies supported for card spending.

Should I pay in SGD at an overseas terminal?

No. Choose the local currency. Paying in SGD usually invokes dynamic currency conversion, letting the merchant or ATM provider set the rate instead of your wallet. Review the amount carefully before entering your PIN or confirming contactless payment.

The modelled tables model currency conversion only. They exclude Revolut plan subscriptions, weekend adjustments, overseas-transfer fees, ATM charges and third-party costs. The YouTrip model includes a conservative 0.5% benchmark allowance even though YouTrip states that it adds no fee or markup to exchanges in its 12 stored wallet currencies.
