Remitly is usually cheaper than Ria in our model, but the useful answer depends on the exact route and payout. Remitly suits someone sending online who can choose between available speed options. Ria adds a large retail network, in-person sending and some unusual delivery choices. Get a standard quote from each, because a first-transfer offer can hide the price you will pay later.
- Our model usually puts Remitly first on cost. Its modelled fee and rate markup are lower on the same transfer.
- Ria gives senders more ways to start. Depending on country, you may send online, in the app or at a shop.
- Both support more than bank deposits. Cash pickup and mobile-wallet delivery depend on the destination and local partner.
- First-send pricing is temporary. Compare the promoted quote with the standard repeat-customer rate.
Remitly vs Ria fees for a family transfer
Here is a modelled $500 transfer from US dollars to Philippine pesos. This is a useful family-payment size, but it is not a live checkout quote from either provider.
Our Remitly estimate combines a fixed fee with a smaller modelled rate markup than Ria. At $500 the fixed fee matters too, so compare both the fee and the rate rather than sorting by either one alone.
The model still favours Remitly at $2,000 because both markups scale with the amount:
Real prices are less tidy. Remitly says cost changes with the destination, payment method and delivery option. Ria says its fee also changes (opens in a new tab) with the amount, destination and payment or delivery method. A bank-funded deposit and a card-funded cash pickup can therefore reverse a small modelled gap.
Express, Economy and Ria funding are not direct matches
On eligible Remitly routes, you may see Express and Economy. Express is meant for a faster arrival. Economy gives more value when timing is flexible. Remitly does not promise both choices everywhere, so use the delivery time shown for your transfer rather than the label alone.
Ria's payment menu depends heavily on the sender country and channel. In the United States, its 2026 help table lists ACH, cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay online; other countries have different local methods. Ria says cards are faster but carry extra fees, while bank funding is cheaper and may take longer to clear.
For a planned payment, compare the cheaper funding path at both providers. For an emergency, compare the fastest available path instead. Those are different buying decisions.
- Check when the provider expects to receive your money.
- Read the promised delivery time after choosing the payout method.
- Add any card-issuer charge that sits outside the provider quote.
- Leave time for identity review on a new or unusually large transfer.
The common mistake is selecting Express at Remitly and a slower bank-funded choice at Ria, then calling the faster service expensive. Match speed as closely as the checkout allows.
Cash pickup, bank deposit and home delivery
Remitly can offer bank deposit, cash pickup, mobile money, debit-card deposit and home delivery, depending on the destination. Ria lists bank deposit, cash pickup, mobile wallet and home delivery. Neither list means every option is available for every recipient.
Ria's home-delivery help page names Armenia, the Dominican Republic, Hungary, Morocco, the Philippines and Vietnam. That is a useful edge for a recipient who has difficulty travelling, but only if the address and local service qualify. Remitly also advertises home delivery in selected places, so check the actual route rather than assuming one provider owns the feature.
For cash pickup, ask the recipient to choose the branch. A sender may see a famous bank or retail chain and assume every location participates. In practice, opening hours, cash stock, accepted ID and payout currency can differ. The spelling of the recipient's name must match their valid ID.
If the recipient has a dependable account, bank deposit is usually easier to document and avoids carrying cash. Read cash pickup versus bank deposit before choosing on price alone.
First-transfer deals can distort the result
Remitly says new customers may receive a special offer on their first transfer. The promotion can change the fee, exchange rate or both, and may apply only to part of the send. Ria also runs offers by market. A welcome quote is real savings if you qualify, but it is poor evidence for a monthly payment plan.
Take two screenshots:
- the offer quote, including the amount of the transfer covered by the deal;
- the standard quote or published pricing for the next send.
Then decide how much weight to give the first saving. Someone making one urgent transfer can choose the promotion. Someone paying family expenses every month should care more about the repeat quote, reliable payout location and saved-recipient workflow.
Use our comparison tool as the neutral baseline, then confirm the exact route on both provider sites. The model excludes temporary promotions.
Who should choose Remitly or Ria?
Pick Remitly if its normal recipient payout is higher, you are happy to send digitally, and the route offers the delivery speed and payout your recipient needs. The Remitly provider page shows what our estimate includes.
Pick Ria if an in-person counter helps you fund the transfer, its local pickup partner is easier for the recipient, or a route-specific delivery option solves a real access problem. See the Ria provider page for the modelled fee breakdown.
Check another provider if both quotes are weak for a bank deposit, neither offers a practical pickup point, or your funding method adds a large card charge. A third quote takes less time than recovering a failed transfer.
Frequently asked questions
Is Remitly cheaper than Ria?
Remitly is usually cheaper in our model. The real result can change by destination, amount, funding method, delivery type and promotion. Compare the final recipient amount at both checkouts.
Is Remitly Express always available?
No. Remitly says a route may offer Express and Economy, but availability depends on the receiving country and transfer details. Use the speed and price shown for the exact transaction.
Can both providers deliver cash?
Both can offer cash pickup in supported locations. Ria and Remitly also list other payout methods, including bank deposit and mobile wallets. The recipient country and local partner decide what appears.
Which is better for repeat monthly transfers?
Compare standard customer pricing after any welcome offer, using the same amount and funding method. Then weigh reliability, saved-recipient tools and a convenient payout location. The cheapest first send may not be the cheapest routine.
The displayed estimates use each provider's modelled fee structure and today's mid-market reference rate. Remitly and Ria set real prices by route, amount, funding and delivery method. Promotions, card-issuer charges and third-party deductions are excluded. Confirm the final recipient amount and delivery promise at checkout.
