Detailed transfer guide

Detailed USD to NGN transfer guide

We compare the real cost of sending money from the USA to Nigeria at today's rate, and show which providers keep the most of your dollars.

··Updated ·5 min read

For a USA to Nigeria transfer, the cost table is only the first screen. You also need to confirm that the provider currently supports Nigeria, the beneficiary's bank or cash product, the stated payout currency, and your funding method. Those details can change the practical winner.

The live mid-market reference is about 1,373.63. Our comparison models published provider fees and exchange-rate markup against that rate. It does not test route eligibility, Nigerian payout partners, beneficiary approval, limits, tax, or delivery.

The short version
  • For bank deposit, verify the recipient's exact account name, bank, and 10-digit NUBAN, plus any identity or purpose details the provider requests.
  • Check the Nigerian payout partner. The Central Bank of Nigeria publishes a list of approved International Money Transfer Operators.
  • Confirm the payout currency at checkout. Nigeria's remittance framework has changed, and a modelled USD to NGN ranking does not tell you whether a particular product pays naira, foreign currency, bank credit, or cash.
  • From 2026, US funding can add tax. The 1% remittance tax applies to cash and certain physical funding instruments, not account funding or qualifying US-issued cards.

Check the Nigerian payout chain

The Central Bank of Nigeria publishes approved International Money Transfer Operators. Search the provider or the Nigerian partner named in the transfer terms. A consumer-facing brand and the local settlement entity may have different names, so ask the provider to identify who makes the payout.

CBN's March 2026 reform directive says IMTOs must open designated naira settlement accounts with authorised dealer banks and that remittance beneficiary payments and settlement are processed through those accounts. The operational detail still belongs to the provider and partner bank. Confirm the advertised payout currency and method rather than relying on an older guide or a past transfer.

For an account credit, ask the recipient to copy the registered account name, bank, and 10-digit NUBAN from their banking app or statement. The provider may also request the recipient's phone number, address, Bank Verification Number, relationship, or payment purpose. Supply only what the provider requests through its official secure channel.

Cash pickup requires branch-level checks

Cash availability is provider and agent specific. Select the actual Nigerian branch and confirm its opening hours, payout currency, accepted identity document, reference or PIN, expected amount, collection deadline, and whether the recipient needs sender details.

For example, Access Bank's published Ria instructions ask a recipient to provide the expected amount, transfer PIN, acceptable ID, and sender and receiver details, with additional verification listed for the product. That is one bank-partner process, not a rule for every operator. Check the current instructions for the exact service you choose.

Never send an extra “release” or “clearance” payment to an unexpected contact. Call the provider through the number or app in your original receipt.

The 2026 US remittance tax

The IRS says the United States applies a 1% remittance transfer tax from 1 January 2026 when a covered transfer is funded with cash, a money order, a cashier's check, or a similar physical instrument. Account-funded transfers and those funded with a qualifying debit or credit card issued in the United States are outside the tax's scope.

Whether the Nigerian recipient gets bank credit or cash does not decide this tax. The sender's US funding method does. Ask checkout to show the tax separately and compare account funding where available. Our model does not automatically add the tax unless the published provider rule is encoded.

Timing and recipient access

An arrival estimate can include US funding clearance, identity and source-of-funds checks, currency conversion, Nigerian partner processing, recipient-bank review, weekends, public holidays, and agent opening hours. A status saying “sent” does not necessarily mean the recipient can use the funds.

Keep the receipt, expected NGN or other payout amount, reference, promised date, and partner details. Ask the recipient to confirm cleared, usable funds rather than relying only on a notification.

For covered US consumer remittances above $15, the CFPB says providers generally must disclose the exchange rate, fees and taxes, expected recipient amount, and availability date. Many transfers can be cancelled within 30 minutes if the funds have not already been paid, and the CFPB describes an error process with up to 180 days to report a problem.

Frequently asked questions

Does every provider in the table currently send to Nigeria?

No. The table models published pricing through a common quote shape. A listed provider may not serve this route, amount, purpose, bank, cash location, or payout currency. Confirm directly before relying on its ranking.

What details are needed for a Nigerian bank deposit?

Usually the exact account name, bank, and 10-digit NUBAN, plus any phone, address, identity, relationship, or purpose details requested at checkout. Ask the recipient to copy current details from the bank.

Does Nigerian cash pickup trigger the 1% US tax?

No. The tax depends on how the sender funds the transfer in the United States. Cash and certain physical instruments are in scope; account funding and qualifying US-issued cards are outside the stated scope.

Are the modelled costs guaranteed?

No. Provider availability, payout currency, partner bank, funding, limits, tax, documents, and timing can change the result. Confirm the exact recipient amount at checkout and read our markup versus transfer fee guide.
