For a USA to Brazil transfer, compare the final reais after conversion, provider fees, and any tax or local charge shown at checkout. A payout described as Pix can be fast in Brazil, but the international transfer still needs an authorised foreign-exchange step before the local BRL payment.
The current mid-market reference is about 5.1543. Our table models published provider fees and exchange-rate markup against that rate. It does not establish route eligibility, the recipient's account or Pix support, the correct transfer purpose, tax, or delivery time.
- For a Brazilian account, verify the recipient's full registered name, CPF, bank, branch, account, and Pix key where the provider requests it.
- Pix is a possible local payout rail, not proof of an instant international transfer. The provider must first complete funding, checks, conversion, and local instruction.
- Brazilian VET is the useful local comparison concept. Banco Central do Brasil says it combines exchange rate, IOF, and fees for the foreign-exchange operation.
- From 2026, the US 1% remittance tax depends on funding. Cash and certain physical instruments are in scope; account funding and qualifying US-issued cards are outside the tax's stated scope.
Live USD to BRL cost comparison
At $1,000, the model currently ranks published fee and exchange-rate cost like this:
Wise's modelled result is approximately 0.90% all-in, or $9.03. This is a common cost benchmark. It is not confirmation that Wise or another displayed provider supports your recipient, transfer purpose, Brazilian payout, funding method, or amount.
At $10,000, re-check the ranking, quote expiry, and document requirements:
Enter your amount in the comparison tool, then request final BRL quotes from eligible services at nearly the same time. Record the total USD debit, BRL promised, exchange rate, fee, IOF or other tax shown, recipient deduction, funding method, and estimated availability.
The public withdrawal-fee list from Interactive Brokers does not include BRL. Its low spot-FX commission is therefore not a quote for delivering reais to Brazil; compare a transfer provider that confirms the Brazilian bank route, Pix details where relevant and final amount received.
How a BRL payout works
Banco Central do Brasil says receiving foreign funds may require an institution authorised to operate in the foreign-exchange market or a correspondent. The institution must explain its procedures and the Valor Efetivo Total, or VET, which includes the exchange rate, IOF, and fees charged in the operation.
Some products fix the BRL amount abroad and deliver reais directly to the recipient account. Others can require recipient action with a Brazilian institution before the funds become available. Ask the provider which model it uses and whether the recipient must submit documents or accept a conversion.
For an account credit, collect the beneficiary's exact name, CPF, bank, branch, account number, account type if requested, and transfer purpose. The Banco Central advises a recipient expecting foreign currency to contact the authorised institution before funds are sent to confirm documents and conditions.
Pix details and limits
A provider may advertise payout through Pix or use Pix in the local BRL leg. Banco Central says a Pix key can be a CPF or CNPJ, mobile number, email address, or random key. A person can also receive Pix using full bank, branch, account, and CPF details without a registered key.
Use only the identifier requested by the international provider. Confirm the recipient name returned before paying. A correct-looking email or phone number can point to the wrong person if it was mistyped or changed.
Banco Central generally does not impose one universal maximum Pix value, but financial institutions set risk-based limits. The overseas provider can also impose a lower amount or frequency limit. Check the recipient's current Pix and account limits, especially for an unusual transfer.
Purpose, IOF, and Brazilian records
The purpose of an inward payment matters. Family support, a gift, reimbursement, salary, sale proceeds, a loan, property, and business income should not be labelled interchangeably. The Brazilian institution may request documents, and tax or reporting can depend on the true facts.
Compare the provider's final quote with the VET concept, but do not assume the modelled all-in percentage includes the correct IOF for your case. Keep the quote, exchange contract or receipt, transfer purpose, and payout confirmation. For a material gift, income payment, property transaction, or other non-routine transfer, the recipient should obtain Brazilian tax advice.
The 2026 US remittance tax
The IRS says a 1% tax applies from 1 January 2026 to covered remittance transfers funded with cash, a money order, a cashier's check, or a similar physical instrument. Transfers funded from an account, or with a qualifying debit or credit card issued in the United States, are outside the tax's scope.
A Brazilian cash withdrawal or Pix payout does not determine the US tax. The deciding factor is the sender's US funding instrument. Compare an account-funded quote where available and ask checkout to show any tax separately. Our model does not automatically add it unless the published rule has been encoded.
Timing and US consumer rights
An “instant Pix” description can refer only to the local BRL payment. US funding clearance, identity and source-of-funds review, conversion, Brazilian compliance, recipient documents, weekends, and public holidays can add time.
For covered US consumer remittances above $15, the CFPB says providers generally must disclose the exchange rate, fees and taxes, expected recipient amount, and availability date. Many transfers have a 30-minute cancellation window if the funds have not already been deposited or collected, and errors can generally be reported within 180 days.
Frequently asked questions
Can I send from the USA directly to a Pix key?
Some providers offer a product that pays BRL using Pix, but support is provider-specific. The international transfer still includes funding, compliance, and foreign-exchange stages. Use only the key type requested and confirm the recipient name.
What is VET?
Valor Efetivo Total is Banco Central do Brasil's all-in measure for a foreign-exchange operation. It includes the exchange rate, IOF, and fees. Ask the Brazilian institution or provider to show the relevant total for your transaction.
Does the US tax apply because the recipient receives through Pix or cash?
No. The 1% tax depends on how the sender funds the transfer in the United States. Cash and certain physical instruments are in scope; account funding and qualifying US-issued cards are outside the stated scope.
Are these rankings final quotes?
No. They model published provider fee and rate cost. Route support, Pix or account payout, purpose, IOF, other tax, limits, documents, and timing require checkout confirmation. Our guide to exchange-rate markup explains the model.
Cost figures use published provider fee and rate methods against the current mid-market reference. They are modelled estimates, not guaranteed quotes or proof of route, recipient, or payout eligibility. Tax treatment can depend on purpose and funding method.
