Current estimates for GBP → NGN at 20,000 GBP · ranked by amount received · 2 Sept 2026

What the comparison shows

Every row above uses the same market rate before fees (1 GBP = 1,855.22 NGN). At this amount, Revolut (Metal) leaves the recipient with the most, about NGN 77,572.58 more than Revolut (Premium). The order can change with the amount and the provider's final price.

The top two are close, within NGN 77,572.58 of each other, and that gap is exactly why the amount matters. Rerun it for 250 GBP and the order can shift, because fixed fees weigh more on small transfers and percentage fees weigh more on large ones.

Detailed transfer guide

Detailed GBP to NGN transfer guide

Compare GBP-to-NGN estimates, account and counter routes, FCA and CBN checks, plus recipient details such as NUBAN, ID and BVN.

··Updated ·7 min read

The best UK to Nigeria transfer is the one that delivers the most usable naira through a payout route the recipient can actually access. Price still matters, but Nigeria's remittance rules, local bank partner, account details, and identity checks can disqualify an otherwise attractive quote.

Use the tables below to compare the modelled fee and exchange-rate cost. Before paying, verify both sides of the service: the UK legal entity on the FCA register and the Nigerian operator or bank partner named in the quote.

The short version
  • Compare the final NGN amount for the same payout route. A bank-account quote and an over-the-counter quote are not interchangeable.
  • Check the legal entities, not only the brand. The UK sender-facing company should have the right FCA permissions, and the Nigerian side should use a CBN-licensed International Money Transfer Operator or authorised bank arrangement.
  • Have the recipient details ready. Account deposits normally need the exact account name and 10-digit NUBAN; counter services can require a PIN or reference, expected amount, accepted ID, and BVN.
  • Nigeria's rules change. Reconfirm payout currency and method in the live quote even if the provider or bank offered something different on an earlier transfer.

In the current model, Wise is near 0.60% all-in, about £6.00 on £1,000. This is a modelled result, not a guarantee that Wise or any other ranked provider can pay the recipient through every Nigerian bank or collection method.

Use the first table as a shortlist. Then request provider quotes with the same funding source, delivery speed, and Nigerian payout method. Check the exact NGN credited after all charges. Our guide to exchange-rate markup explains why a "no fee" offer can still deliver less.

At £5,000, a small exchange-rate difference can outweigh a fixed fee. It is also more likely that the provider asks about source of funds or the reason for the payment. Have a recent bank statement, payslip, invoice, or other evidence ready if the request is legitimate and comes through the provider's secure channel.

Do not split a transfer only to avoid a provider's check. That can delay the payment or trigger a review. If the recipient's bank has a credit limit or the provider quotes a lower cap, use the provider's stated route rather than assuming the £1,000 flow scales unchanged.

How money can reach the recipient

Nigeria does not have one universal set of recipient steps. The provider and local bank determine the operational details.

Payout routeRecipient details commonly neededQuestions to ask before paying
Naira account depositExact account name, bank name, 10-digit NUBAN, phone number, and sometimes BVN or purposeIs this bank supported, what exact NGN amount will be credited, and when will it be available?
Counter collectionPIN or transfer reference, expected amount, sender and receiver details, accepted photo ID, and sometimes BVNWhich named bank and branch, what currency, what hours, and how long can the money be collected?
Foreign-currency or domiciliary accountMatching account currency and details, plus any local-bank requirementsWill the recipient receive the foreign currency or a naira conversion, and can the bank deduct a charge?

Access Bank's Ria page (opens in a new tab) illustrates how partner-specific these rules are. It lists counter collection or direct Access Bank account credit. For counter payment it asks for the PIN, expected amount, acceptable identification, sender details, and receiver details; its accepted options include verified BVN and named photo IDs. The same page describes USD cash or domiciliary-account credit for its service. That does not prove another provider offers the same payout.

Verify the UK company and Nigerian route

The FCA advises (opens in a new tab) checking the legal company on the Financial Services Register and confirming that it has permission for the service. A trading brand can differ from the registered entity named in the website footer or terms.

This check also tells you what protection applies. The FCA says funds at authorised payment institutions and electronic money institutions are safeguarded, but they are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme in the way eligible bank deposits are. Small payment institutions do not have the same safeguarding requirement.

On the Nigerian side, check the current CBN list of licensed International Money Transfer Operators (opens in a new tab). Look for the operator's legal name, then confirm the local bank partner in the provider quote. A brand appearing in a comparison table is not a substitute for this check.

Current CBN settlement rule

Nigeria's central bank has continued to revise the operational framework. The CBN reforms page (opens in a new tab) records a directive dated 24 March 2026 requiring IMTOs to hold designated naira settlement accounts with authorised dealer banks. It says remittance-related beneficiary payments and settlements must be processed through those accounts.

That rule concerns the settlement path behind the transfer. It is another reason to rely on the provider's current Nigeria quote, not an old review or a previous receipt. Payout method and currency can differ by operator and bank partner. This guidance and the CBN operator list were last checked on 15 August 2026.

A safer quote-to-receipt process

  1. Ask the recipient whether they can accept a naira account deposit. Get the exact account name, bank, 10-digit NUBAN, and any requested BVN or phone details.
  2. Use our comparison tool for the amount, then open at least two matching provider quotes and compare the exact NGN received.
  3. Find the provider's UK legal entity in its footer or terms and check that entity on the FCA register. Check the Nigeria operator on the CBN list and note the local bank partner.
  4. If collection is over the counter, confirm the PIN or reference, accepted ID, currency, named branch, and availability date before the recipient travels.
  5. Keep the quote and receipt. If the amount, account, or availability date is wrong, contact the provider promptly and use its complaint process.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to send pounds to naira?

There is no single winner for every amount and payout route. Use the modelled table to find the lowest modelled all-in cost, then confirm that the provider supports the recipient's bank or collection method and compare the final NGN amount in its checkout.

Does the recipient need a BVN?

It depends on the bank and payout method. Account services can request it during verification, and some counter services accept a verified BVN as identification or ask for it alongside ID. Access Bank's Ria instructions list verified BVN among its accepted identification options. Follow the named local partner's current instructions.

Can the recipient collect cash in Nigeria?

Some bank-partner services publish counter collection, but availability, currency, limits, and identification rules vary. Do not infer cash availability from a provider's general Nigeria page. Confirm the named Nigerian bank, branch, currency, and collection requirements in the final quote.

Is an FCA-authorised payment provider protected by FSCS?

Not in the same way as an eligible UK bank deposit. The FCA says authorised payment institutions and electronic money institutions must safeguard customer funds, but non-bank payment-provider balances are not FSCS protected. Check the entity type on the register.

How quickly will the money arrive?

Use the availability date in the actual provider quote. Funding clearance, compliance review, Nigerian settlement, account validation, weekends, and branch hours can change it. Do not promise an instant payment based on an advertisement alone.

Are the comparison figures guaranteed?

No. They are modelled estimates based on published pricing and the current mid-market rate. They do not confirm payout eligibility, a local partner's rate, a receiving charge, a promotion, or the time needed for review. Confirm every item in the provider's checkout.

Cost figures are modelled estimates for a typical GBP to NGN transfer, not guaranteed quotes.
