What the comparison shows

Every row above uses the same market rate before fees (1 AUD = 1.2123 NZD). At this amount, Revolut (Standard) leaves the recipient with the most. The order can change with the amount and the provider's final price.

Frequently asked questions

What's the cheapest way to send AUD to NZD right now?

Across the displayed providers and plans at 250 AUD, Revolut (Standard) ranks first at an estimated total cost of 0.10% and amount after conversion of NZ$302.78. Confirm availability, how you pay, how the recipient receives the money and the final provider quote.

How much does it cost to send 250 AUD to NZD?

It depends on the provider and transfer setup. In this comparison, the difference from the market-rate amount starts near NZ$0.30 with Revolut (Standard); our typical-bank example is NZ$50.25. The market rate before fees is 1 AUD = 1.2123 NZD.

Is it cheaper than using my bank to send AUD to NZD?

In this comparison, Revolut (Standard)'s estimate is about NZ$49.95 above our typical-bank example (19.76%). Your bank's actual wire fee and exchange rate may be better or worse, so request a bank quote before deciding.

Does the cheapest provider change with the amount?

Often, yes. Fixed fees bite harder on small transfers, while percentage fees and exchange-rate markups dominate on large ones, so the ranking for 250 AUD can differ from the ranking for 1,000 AUD. The amount chips above re-run the comparison instantly.

Detailed transfer guide

Detailed AUD to NZD transfer guide

Compare AUD-to-NZD estimates for local deposits and SWIFT, with NZ account formatting, AUSTRAC checks, source-of-funds and tax context.

··Updated ·8 min read

Sending money from Australia to New Zealand is usually a bank-account job, but it is not always an international bank wire. A specialist can collect AUD in Australia and pay NZD locally, while a bank can send through SWIFT. Compare the number of New Zealand dollars credited, the rate guarantee, and any receiving deduction before choosing.

For a modelled A$1,000 transfer, Wise currently sits near A$4.43, or 0.44% of the amount. That is a useful price signal, not a guaranteed quote or a promise that one provider wins at every size.

The short version
  • Compare NZD credited, not the AUD fee. Include the exchange-rate margin, provider fee, card or bank funding cost, intermediary deduction, and recipient-bank charge where applicable.
  • New Zealand does not use IBAN. For a bank payment, get the recipient's full account number, account name, address if requested, and the bank's SWIFT/BIC when the sending route uses SWIFT.
  • Check the Australian provider. Money-transfer businesses operating in Australia must be registered with AUSTRAC; verify the legal entity on the public register.
  • Plan large payments early. A relocation, house deposit, or asset purchase can require source-of-funds evidence, a higher transfer limit, and coordination with the recipient bank.

Compare an A$1,000 bank-account transfer

One Australian dollar currently buys about 1.2123 New Zealand dollars at the mid-market rate. This is the baseline for measuring both the visible fee and any rate markup.

For the standard A$1,000 account-deposit scenario, the Wise model is currently near A$4.43, equal to about 0.44%. That pair of figures is useful only when the provider confirms the same funding route, recipient account, and delivery method.

The ranked table estimates standard provider cost for AUD to NZD. It does not know whether you will fund by card or bank transfer, use a local NZD payout or SWIFT, or send to an account type the provider excludes. Open the leading quotes and match all those choices before relying on the ranking.

Australian Government Moneysmart guidance (opens in a new tab) recommends comparing the exchange rate and margin, rate guarantee, transfer fees, payment method, transfer time, limits, and receiving method. That checklist is especially useful here because a bank can show a familiar flat fee while recovering more through its exchange rate.

At A$10,000, a 0.5 percentage point price difference is A$50. At A$50,000 it is A$250. Fixed charges become less important, while the rate, any percentage fee, and the time for which the rate is guaranteed take over.

If a large AUD-to-NZD conversion funds a New Zealand investment, executes a genuine currency trade or manages a portfolio's NZD exposure, compare Interactive Brokers first: its exceptionally low spot-FX pricing can be difficult to beat. It is not a substitute for a money-transfer service when paying a solicitor, school, vendor or another person.

For a house deposit or relocation payment, quote the full intended amount rather than multiplying the A$1,000 result. Ask these questions:

  1. Is the shown rate locked when you create the transfer or only after cleared AUD arrives?
  2. How long do you have to fund it, and what happens if the money arrives late?
  3. Will the provider pay NZD locally or send a SWIFT wire that can incur an intermediary or receiving charge?
  4. What identity and source-of-funds documents are required at this amount?
  5. Does the recipient, solicitor, school, or vendor require the full invoiced NZD amount with no deduction?

Our full comparison tool lets you rerun the amount, and the markup versus fee guide explains how to compare a quoted customer rate with the mid-market reference.

Local NZD payout versus SWIFT

RouteHow it worksMain checks
Specialist local payoutProvider collects AUD and credits NZD to the New Zealand account through its local payment setupExact NZD credited, supported account, funding deadline, payment reference, and provider limit
Bank or provider SWIFT wireSending institution sends an international payment to the New Zealand bankSender fee, customer exchange rate, SWIFT/BIC, possible correspondent deductions, receiving-bank fee, and arrival date

Ask the provider which route the quote uses. A low-cost local payout and a SWIFT wire should not be compared on the sender fee alone.

The practical account format is easy to get wrong. ANZ New Zealand's incoming-payment instructions (opens in a new tab) say New Zealand banks do not use IBAN. They ask for the account number, account name, account address, and SWIFT/BIC for an incoming international payment. If a sender requests a national clearing code, routing number, BSB, or sort code, ANZ says its customers use the first six digits of the account number, which are the bank and branch codes. Other banks should be checked against their own instructions.

Provider checks and large-transfer documents

AUSTRAC explains (opens in a new tab) that transfer providers in Australia must register and lets consumers check the public register. Search for the legal company named in the provider's Australian terms, not only the trading brand. Registration is a basic legal check, not an endorsement of price or service quality.

New Zealand money remitters and covered financial businesses also operate under the country's AML/CFT framework (opens in a new tab). Large or unusual payments can prompt questions about who owns the money and why it is being sent. Keep documents that fit the purpose, such as a sale agreement, bank statement showing accumulated savings, payslip, investment statement, property contract, or solicitor instruction. Supply them only through a verified provider or bank channel.

Gifts, family support, and New Zealand tax

Moving money is not itself proof that the recipient owes tax. The reason for the payment matters.

New Zealand Inland Revenue says a gift is not usually subject to income tax (opens in a new tab), but its guidance also covers cases where a payment described as a gift is assessable income in the recipient's hands. A genuine family gift is different from payment for work, rent, interest, or business activity.

Inland Revenue also says a New Zealand tax resident generally pays New Zealand tax on worldwide income (opens in a new tab), even if the money was not brought into New Zealand. Keep a clear record of the payment's purpose and seek tax advice for compensation, investment income, business receipts, trusts, or large gifts with unusual facts.

A five-minute pre-transfer check

  1. Copy the recipient account name and full NZ account number from a bank statement or banking app. Do not reconstruct it from memory.
  2. If the route is SWIFT, use the receiving bank's official SWIFT/BIC instructions and confirm whether an address is required. Do not enter a made-up IBAN.
  3. Compare the exact amount in our table, then obtain at least two final quotes with the same funding method and transfer route.
  4. Verify the Australian legal entity on AUSTRAC's register and review its transfer limit and rate-lock terms.
  5. For a time-sensitive or large payment, send a small test if the recipient permits it, confirm the payment reference, and leave time for compliance checks.

Frequently asked questions

Do New Zealand bank accounts have an IBAN?

No. ANZ New Zealand states that New Zealand banks do not use IBAN. Use the complete New Zealand account number and, for SWIFT, the receiving bank's official SWIFT/BIC plus any name and address fields it requires.

Is a specialist always cheaper than an Australian bank?

Not always. Specialists often price well, but the result depends on amount, funding method, route, rate, and receiving deductions. Compare the exact NZD credited at the same time rather than relying on a general claim or an A$1,000 example for a much larger payment.

Will a family gift from Australia be taxed in New Zealand?

A genuine gift is not usually subject to New Zealand income tax, according to Inland Revenue, but the payment's real character controls. Money for services, rent, interest, or other income does not become a tax-free gift because the sender labels it one. Keep records and get advice for a large or uncertain payment.

Why did the provider ask for source of funds?

Remittance providers and banks have anti-money-laundering duties. A large property, relocation, or investment payment can require evidence of how the sender obtained the money and why it is going to the recipient. This is separate from the provider's transfer fee.

Are the comparison numbers live quotes?

No. They are modelled estimates based on published provider pricing and the current mid-market rate. They do not guarantee account eligibility, a rate-lock window, a SWIFT deduction, a recipient-bank fee, or document approval. Confirm the final quote and transfer instructions.

Cost figures are modelled estimates for an AUD to NZD transfer, not guaranteed quotes. The tables compare provider fee and exchange-rate cost but do not confirm account eligibility, funding-specific pricing, SWIFT deductions, recipient-bank fees, taxes, rate-lock terms, or document requirements.
