Detailed USD to VND transfer guide

We compare the real, total cost of sending money from the USA to Vietnam (USD to VND) at two amounts, and show which provider keeps the least.

··7 min read

For most people, the cheapest way to send money from the United States to Vietnam right now is a specialist provider such as Wise. It gives your family the real, mid-market exchange rate, currently 26,072.90, and adds a small fee that works out to about 0.67% of a $1,000 transfer.

The household names you see advertised, Western Union and MoneyGram, usually cost more once you measure the whole transfer, because most of their charge is hidden inside a weaker exchange rate. The USA to Vietnam route is one of the world's biggest for family support, so a few percentage points is real money. The figures below are modelled estimates, so confirm the final number on the provider's own site before you send.

The short version
  • For most bank-deposit transfers, Wise is the cheapest. It hands over the real exchange rate and adds a small fee, roughly 0.4% on this route.
  • The "low fee" brands cost more overall. Western Union and MoneyGram advertise small fees but bury the real price in a weaker rate.
  • The amount shifts the ranking. A flat fee stings more on a small transfer, so compare at the size you actually send.
  • How your family collects the money changes the cost. A bank deposit is usually cheaper than cash pickup, which carries a bigger markup.

The cheapest way to send dollars to dong

At $1,000 the ranking is hard to argue with. Wise sits at the top with an all-in cost of about 0.67%, because it charges the real rate and adds only a small fee of roughly $6.67. The remittance brands sit higher. Most of what they charge is baked into the exchange rate rather than shown as a fee, so the headline number looks friendly while the total is not.

The pattern surprises people. The brands you see on television and at the grocery-store checkout are usually the most expensive way to send, even though they feel like the safe, obvious choice. Western Union's all-in cost on this route runs to about 3.98% of a $1,000 transfer, several times what Wise charges. A typical bank, off this chart, would sit past 3% once you add the outgoing wire fee. The full comparison shows where every provider lands.

Sending a larger amount

Send $10,000 and the gap widens. A percentage markup that looks small on paper becomes a large sum on a big transfer. Wise's fee stays close to 0.4% of the whole amount, while a 3% markup on the same $10,000 is about $300 that never reaches your family. The flat fee each provider charges barely matters at this size. The rate is what decides the winner.

Ranked by estimated amount after exchange · monthly plan prices shown separately

Read the table as a snapshot, not a promise. On the USA to Vietnam route, availability and exact pricing vary a lot by provider, and not every name in the list supports Vietnamese dong payouts, so the order can shift as pricing changes.

This is also where the payout method starts to matter more, not less. If your family collects cash, the remittance brands may quote a worse rate for cash pickup than for a bank deposit, on top of the markup the table already shows. For a large transfer, the cheapest option is almost always a bank deposit to a Vietnamese bank account through a low-markup provider.

What affects the cost

Four things decide what a transfer really costs. You control two of them directly: how much you send and which provider you use.

  • The fee. A fixed charge, often $4 to $6, that you see up front. It barely moves on a big transfer but looms large on a small one.
  • The markup. The cut taken inside the exchange rate, and usually the biggest cost of all. A provider can advertise a $0 fee and still cost you 3% here.
  • The amount. Because the fee is flat, small transfers pay a higher percentage. Sending $200 costs more per dollar than sending $2,000.
  • The provider, and the payout method. Pricing models differ. Wise charges a fee and gives you the real rate; Western Union does the opposite, with a low fee and a high markup. And how your family collects the money, bank deposit or cash, can change the price again.

Who should use what

Use Wise if your family has a bank account in Vietnam and you want the lowest, most predictable cost. You always know what you will pay before you confirm, and the rate is the real one. For a regular monthly transfer to support family, that predictability is worth a lot.

Use a remittance provider such as Remitly, WorldRemit, or Western Union if your family needs to collect cash. Vietnam has a wide cash-pickup network, and these brands are built around it. You pay more for that convenience, sometimes a lot more, so choose this route only if a bank deposit is not an option. Remitly often runs a special rate for new customers, which can make a first transfer noticeably cheaper.

Use your bank only if you have no other choice. A typical US bank adds a 3% markup and a wire fee of around $35 on the same transfer, which is roughly ten times what a specialist charges. If the bank is the only thing you have used until now, our guide to cutting FX fees walks through how to switch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wise the cheapest way to send money to Vietnam?

Usually, yes, for transfers that arrive in a bank account. Wise gives you the real exchange rate and adds a small fee, so its total cost stays low at almost any amount. The main reason to pay more is cash pickup, which Wise does not focus on. If your family needs cash in hand, a remittance provider may suit them better even though it costs more.

Can my family pick up cash instead of a bank deposit?

Yes. Providers such as Western Union, MoneyGram, WorldRemit and Remitly all offer cash pickup across Vietnam, which helps if your family does not bank. The trade-off is price: cash pickup usually carries a higher exchange-rate markup than a bank deposit, and the fee can differ too. Check both the fee and the rate before you choose, and ask your family which pickup location is convenient for them.

Are these numbers exact?

The table uses the current mid-market reference and, where available, a Wise account-holder API estimate. Other providers use stored published fee and markup models, not live quotes, so the results are modelled estimates for typical routes. On the USA to Vietnam route in particular, availability and exact pricing vary a lot by provider, and not every provider supports Vietnamese dong payouts. New customers often get a promotional rate too. Always confirm the final figure on the provider's own checkout before you send.

Cost figures are worked out from each provider's published fee structure applied to the current mid-market reference rate, modelled estimates for typical routes. The remittance brands (Western Union, MoneyGram, Remitly and WorldRemit) vary their pricing by route, payment method and how the money is collected; the figures shown are representative. On this route, availability and exact pricing vary a lot by provider, so always confirm the final quote on the provider's own site before you transfer.
