Is CurrencyFair a good choice?
A practical bank-transfer specialist with a simple published fee and human phone support, especially for customers whose currencies are among its focused set.
Best for
- Bank-funded personal transfers
- Property, tuition, pension and tax payments
- Small businesses paying overseas staff or suppliers
CurrencyFair pricing at a glance
CurrencyFair says its exchange-rate margin varies by currency and is typically about 0.53%. Its current European site also lists a €3, or currency-equivalent, charge when exchanged money is transferred out.
This is a USD-to-EUR currency-conversion example. Your exact price may differ by country and by how you pay and receive the money.
About CurrencyFair
CurrencyFair launched in Ireland in 2010. The company says it has opened accounts for more than 200,000 customers over 16 years.
It supports more than 20 currencies and sends to more than 150 countries. CurrencyFair operates through regulated entities and partners in Europe, the UK, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the United States.
How CurrencyFair pricing works
There is no setup or monthly account fee. You fund the CurrencyFair account, choose an available rate and then send the exchanged money to a bank account.
The final cost depends on the currencies, the live rate and any bank charges outside CurrencyFair's control. Regional terms can differ, so use the quote shown for your registered account.
What else you get
Useful timing tools
Rate alerts can notify you when the market reaches a level you have chosen, which helps when the transfer is not urgent.
Support from real people
CurrencyFair publishes local weekday phone numbers and also provides email and online help.
Strengths and trade-offs
Reasons to choose CurrencyFair
- Straightforward published transfer-out fee
- Works for both personal and business bank payments
- Phone support in several regions
Reasons to compare alternatives
- A smaller currency selection than the broadest multi-currency services
- No cash-pickup or mobile-wallet delivery
- The transfer cannot proceed until funding and any required checks are complete
Support and account checks
CurrencyFair provides local phone, email and support-centre help; published phone hours are generally weekdays and vary by office.
Opening an account requires identity checks and supporting documents appropriate to the customer's country and account type.
CurrencyFair or its local account provider may ask for more information about a transfer or evidence showing where the money came from.
When to look elsewhere
Choose Wise for a wider set of currencies and an exact transfer quote, OFX for larger transfers with round-the-clock specialist support, or Remitly or MoneyGram when the recipient needs cash or a mobile wallet.
Large investment-related exchange?
For a large currency conversion that is part of genuine investing or trading in the account, compare Interactive Brokers first: its pricing can be difficult to beat. IBKR is a brokerage, not a stand-alone transfer service; use a transfer specialist for cash pickup or a direct payment to someone else.
What to know before you use CurrencyFair
The typical margin is an average-style guide, not a promise for every currency or amount.
The recipient's bank or another bank involved in the payment may deduct charges that are not included in CurrencyFair's flat transfer-out fee.
Because the service focuses on bank transfers, confirm that both the funding and destination account details are accepted before moving a large sum.
