Airwallex vs Payoneer: compare business payment tools

Compare Airwallex and Payoneer for getting paid, holding currencies, paying suppliers and converting business revenue across borders.

··9 min read

Airwallex and Payoneer are business payment platforms, not ordinary consumer remittance apps. Airwallex is designed as a financial operating layer for companies that collect, hold, convert and pay in many currencies. Payoneer is strongest when a freelancer, marketplace seller or small business needs to receive commercial payments from overseas clients and platforms.

That difference changes what a fair price comparison looks like. On a representative $10,000 USD-to-EUR business payment, our model puts Airwallex at about $50.00 and Payoneer at about $200.00. The Airwallex model reflects its published major-currency markup. The Payoneer model represents a cross-currency withdrawal or payment, not the lower-priced conversion between two Payoneer balances.

The short version
  • Airwallex fits an operating business. It combines global accounts, a multi-currency wallet, supplier and employee payouts, cards, payment acceptance and API access.
  • Payoneer fits getting paid by clients and marketplaces. Local receiving details and platform integrations are its central advantage.
  • The same Payoneer account has several fee paths. Its official pricing lists 0.5% for moving between Payoneer currency balances, while some cross-currency withdrawals and payments range from 1.2% to 4%.
  • Our chart favours Airwallex for the modelled cross-currency payment, but it does not decide an internal balance conversion or marketplace-payout workflow.
  • Model the whole money path. Collection, conversion, withdrawal, Swift, card acceptance and account fees can matter more than one FX percentage.

The products overlap, but they are not substitutes in every workflow. A marketplace may already pay directly into Payoneer. A company needing approval chains, batch payouts and software integrations may find Airwallex better suited even before comparing FX.

What the cost model includes

Airwallex's US pricing page lists a 0.5% markup above interbank rates for major currencies and 1% for other currencies. It lists free local transfers to more than 120 countries and separate charges for Swift payments. Our model uses the 0.5% major-currency markup for USD to EUR and excludes monthly plans, Swift and payment-acceptance charges.

Payoneer's January 2026 pricing update separates several actions. Moving funds between Payoneer balances is listed at 0.5%. A payment or withdrawal to a bank account can fall in a broader 1.2% to 4% range depending on location, payment method and currencies. Our model uses 2% as a representative cross-currency payment or withdrawal cost.

This distinction is essential. If your task is only converting a USD Payoneer balance into a EUR Payoneer balance, the 2% chart is not the applicable official schedule. If your task ends with euros in an external bank account, the payment or withdrawal pricing is more relevant.

A 1.5 percentage-point difference is $150 on $10,000 before any Swift or recipient-bank charge. That makes it worth mapping which Payoneer fee path applies instead of copying a generic percentage from a review.

At this amount, negotiated terms, custom pricing, payout rails and like-for-like settlement can change the result. Ask each provider to price the full path from customer payment to spendable funds in the destination account.

Pick by how money enters the account

Payoneer can be a natural choice when revenue starts on an online marketplace. Its receiving accounts give eligible customers local payment details in supported currencies, and businesses can connect Payoneer to supported marketplaces. That can reduce friction for a platform payout or an overseas client paying through local rails.

Airwallex can be a natural choice when the business collects through its own checkout, invoices customers, or operates entities and teams across countries. Its platform joins receiving accounts and wallets to payments, corporate cards, expense controls and software integrations.

Do not compare only the last conversion. Write down how the customer pays, where the balance appears, which currency it is held in and how it reaches your operating bank account. A cheaper final conversion can be outweighed by a higher collection fee at the first step.

Pick by how money leaves the account

Airwallex advertises local transfers to more than 120 countries and Swift transfers to more than 200. Local payout availability depends on currency and destination. Swift charges and intermediary-bank treatment can differ from a local transfer, so confirm the rail used for each supplier.

Payoneer supports payments to bank accounts and other Payoneer customers where the relevant service is available. A Payoneer-to-Payoneer payment can have different pricing from a bank payout. Supplier eligibility and the currency held in the account affect the path.

For payroll-like contractor payments, ask four questions:

  • Does the recipient have to open an account?
  • Will the recipient receive the invoiced currency or a converted one?
  • Is the payout local, Swift or an internal network transfer?
  • Who absorbs intermediary and receiving-bank charges?

API and finance operations

Airwallex places API transfers, batch payments, approval flows, card controls and accounting integrations inside the same platform. That can reduce manual finance work for a team paying many suppliers or reconciling transactions across currencies.

Payoneer focuses more heavily on the commercial relationship between businesses, freelancers, marketplaces and overseas clients. Its payment requests, receiving accounts and marketplace connections can be more valuable than a broad treasury toolset for a solo operator.

The product with more features is not automatically the better one. A freelancer paid by two marketplaces may value Payoneer's established payout path. A company with several approvers and hundreds of monthly supplier payments may value Airwallex's operational controls.

Build a full-cost worksheet

For each provider, estimate a full month rather than one conversion:

  1. Add fees for receiving customer payments.
  2. Add card or local-payment acceptance costs where relevant.
  3. Add currency conversion on the amount that actually needs converting.
  4. Add local, Swift or bank-withdrawal charges.
  5. Add account, plan, card and inactive-account costs.
  6. Subtract any conversion avoided by holding and paying in the same currency.
  7. Record staff time spent exporting, approving and reconciling payments.

Holding USD revenue and paying a USD supplier without conversion can be cheaper than converting twice through the provider with the lowest advertised FX rate. Like-for-like settlement and matching revenue to expenses often matter more than a tiny rate difference.

See Wise vs Payoneer for a more self-service conversion comparison and Wise vs Airwallex for a consumer-and-business boundary. The comparison tool can screen the raw currency cost before you add workflow charges.

Who should choose which provider

Choose Airwallex if you need a business wallet joined to supplier payouts, batch payments, cards, payment acceptance, controls and API access. Its published major-currency markup is competitive for companies converting and paying from the platform.

Choose Payoneer if getting paid by marketplaces or overseas clients is the hard part. Its local receiving details and platform relationships can make revenue collection simpler, even when a later cross-currency bank withdrawal costs more.

Consider using both if one platform is the best collection endpoint and the other is the better operating account. Price every movement between them first, since a withdrawal fee can erase the benefit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Airwallex cheaper than Payoneer?

Airwallex is cheaper in our model for a USD-to-EUR cross-currency bank payment. Payoneer's official fee depends on the action. An internal balance conversion is listed at 0.5%, while some cross-currency withdrawals and payments are 1.2% to 4%. Select the correct fee path before comparing.

Can an individual use Airwallex or Payoneer for family remittances?

These products are built around business use. Availability and onboarding depend on country and eligibility. A personal transfer provider will usually offer a clearer fit for sending family money, cash pickup or a one-off personal bank deposit.

Is a Payoneer receiving account a bank account?

Payoneer says it is not a bank and its receiving accounts should not be treated as traditional bank accounts. They provide local payment details for eligible commercial receipts under Payoneer's rules and availability.

Does Airwallex charge for international transfers?

Airwallex's US pricing lists free local transfers to more than 120 countries and separate $15 to $25 charges for Swift transfers, with SHA and OUR options. Currency conversion charges still apply when currencies differ, and regional pricing can vary.

Which is better for marketplace sellers?

Payoneer is often the more natural starting point when a marketplace directly supports it. Airwallex can be stronger for wider finance operations, such as collecting through your own checkout, managing currencies, issuing cards and paying suppliers. Check the marketplace's payout choices and total withdrawal path.

The chart models an Airwallex major-currency conversion and a representative Payoneer cross-currency payment or withdrawal. It does not apply Payoneer's lower internal balance-conversion price or every collection, plan, Swift and recipient-bank fee.
